Study identifies digital empowerment profiles linked to how older adults perceive aging

As digital technology becomes woven into healthcare, communication, banking and everyday services, a new study is examining an increasingly important question: how does the ability to use digital tools shape the way older adults view their own aging? Published in BMC Geriatrics, the research by L. Zhang, L. Wang and W. Chen investigates distinct “profiles” of digital empowerment among older adults and explores how these profiles are associated with self-perception of aging. The work places digital inclusion at the center of a broader conversation about independence, confidence and well-being in later life.

Digital empowerment is more than simply owning a smartphone or having access to the internet. It can include the skills needed to search for reliable information, communicate online, use digital public services, manage health applications and make informed decisions in technology-rich environments. It may also involve confidence, motivation and the ability to overcome barriers such as unfamiliar interfaces, privacy concerns or limited access to training. By treating empowerment as a multidimensional concept, the researchers move beyond a simple division between older adults who are “online” and those who are not.

The study uses a statistical technique known as latent profile analysis to identify groups of older adults who share similar patterns across several characteristics. Unlike traditional analyses that examine one variable at a time, latent profile analysis looks for hidden subgroups within a population. These groups are not directly observed; instead, they are inferred from patterns in the data. For example, one profile might represent people with strong digital skills and high confidence, while another could include individuals with access to technology but limited ability or willingness to use it. The method allows researchers to study the complexity of digital life without assuming that all older adults experience technology in the same way.

This approach is especially relevant because the digital divide is not a single gap. Some older adults may lack devices or internet access, while others may be connected but struggle to navigate online services. A third group may use technology frequently yet remain vulnerable to misinformation, fraud or exclusion when systems become too complicated. Latent profile analysis can reveal these different combinations, helping researchers and policymakers understand why a one-size-fits-all solution is unlikely to work. Digital training designed for a confident but inexperienced user, for instance, may be ineffective for someone who faces financial, physical or social barriers to access.

The second focus of the research is self-perception of aging, a psychological concept describing how individuals think and feel about growing older. These perceptions can include beliefs about whether aging brings decline, wisdom, social value, independence or opportunities for continued development. Such views are important because they can influence behavior, including whether people seek healthcare, remain physically active, maintain social connections or pursue new activities. The study examines whether different levels and patterns of digital empowerment are linked with more positive or negative views of aging, without reducing the aging experience to technology alone.

The possible connection is increasingly visible in everyday life. Older adults who can confidently use video calls may maintain relationships across distance, while those who can access online health information may feel better prepared to participate in medical decisions. Digital tools can also support lifelong learning, access to public services and engagement with communities that might otherwise remain out of reach. At the same time, repeated experiences of failure, exclusion or dependence on others for basic online tasks could undermine confidence. The researchers’ profile-based framework is designed to capture these contrasting realities and identify which forms of digital empowerment are most closely associated with self-perception of aging.

The findings are potentially significant for public health and social policy because they suggest that digital inclusion should be approached as a matter of healthy aging rather than merely technological convenience. Programs aimed at older adults may need to combine affordable access with accessible design, patient instruction, privacy protection and ongoing support. Training could be tailored to different needs, including basic device use, health-information literacy, online safety and confidence-building. Service providers may also need to simplify digital platforms instead of placing the entire burden of adaptation on older users.

However, an association between digital empowerment and self-perception of aging would not automatically prove that one causes the other. People who already feel confident, socially connected or physically well may be more likely to explore digital tools. Conversely, gaining digital skills could strengthen independence and improve how people view later life. Factors such as education, income, health status, social support and previous work experience with technology may influence both digital empowerment and attitudes toward aging. By identifying patterns rather than relying only on averages, the study offers a more nuanced foundation for future research into these possible relationships.

The broader message is that technology is becoming part of the psychology of aging. As societies move essential services online, the ability to participate digitally may affect not only what older adults can do, but also how they understand their place in a rapidly changing world. The research by Zhang, Wang and Chen highlights the need to recognize different digital experiences among older adults and to design interventions around those differences. In a future where connection, healthcare and citizenship increasingly depend on digital access, empowerment may be measured not by whether older people are connected, but by whether they can use technology with confidence, autonomy and a sense of belonging.
