The University of Stuttgart has once again secured the top global position in the “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” category of the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings. This global ranking evaluates how universities contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the role of academia in fostering sustainable innovation and infrastructure development. Stuttgart’s continued leadership in this category underscores its remarkable commitment to research excellence and technology transfer.

The “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” category, inspired by SDG 9, measures an institution’s capacity to drive technological progress and address critical infrastructure challenges. This assessment considers concrete metrics such as the volume of patents derived from university research, the number of startup companies spun off from academic inventions, and contributions to solving pressing global issues like energy and water supply. Additionally, the indicator evaluates the university’s success in attracting third-party industry funding, highlighting active collaboration between academia and commercial sectors.

In a field of 826 institutions worldwide, the University of Stuttgart stands among a select group of eight institutions sharing the first-place ranking. Notably, this is the third time Stuttgart has achieved the number one position, having previously secured perfect scores in both 2023 and 2024. Although the university narrowly missed perfect scoring in 2025 with 99.9 out of 100 points, its sustained excellence reflects a consistent trajectory of innovation and impactful research.

Professor Manfred Bischoff, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability at the University of Stuttgart, articulates the institution’s philosophy: “Our research and teaching, alongside knowledge and technology transfer, represent a vital mission. We bear responsibility for shaping future innovations and the sustainable world that we will deliver to coming generations.” This vision aligns with the university’s comprehensive approach to sustainability, integrating cutting-edge scientific inquiry with practical solutions applicable to industry and society at large.

Beyond innovation, the University of Stuttgart delivered a strong performance in the “Reduced Inequalities” category (SDG 10), ranking within the 101–200 bracket out of 932 universities. This result reflects the institution’s broader commitment to equity and inclusion, signaling progress toward mitigating disparities in access, opportunity, and outcomes within the academic community.

The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings serve as the only international ranking system evaluating universities based on their contributions to all 17 UN SDGs. The 2026 iteration assessed 1,646 universities across 116 countries and territories, offering a comprehensive lens on how academia is shaping global sustainability trajectories. The University of Stuttgart’s repeated dominance in innovation highlights its pivotal role in driving technological advances critical for sustainable development worldwide.

As universities increasingly integrate sustainability into their core missions, the example set by the University of Stuttgart demonstrates how strategic focus on innovation, infrastructure, and societal responsibility can translate into measurable impact. This achievement not only strengthens its global reputation but also sets a benchmark for other institutions aspiring to lead in sustainable scientific and technological advancement.
