A suicide attempt by someone in an adolescent’s or young adult’s social network may be more than a traumatic event affecting one individual. New findings from a cohort study published in JAMA Network Open suggest that youths exposed to suicide attempts among people they know were more likely to experience a subsequent onset of suicide attempts themselves and showed higher depressive symptoms over time. The results point to a potentially important gap in conventional suicide-risk screening, which often focuses on a young person’s current symptoms, personal history, or expressed thoughts rather than recent events occurring within their social environment.

The study’s central message is that exposure to a suicide attempt may function as an overlooked risk marker. In this context, exposure does not necessarily mean that a young person directly witnessed an attempt. It can include learning that someone in one’s social network—including a friend, peer, family member, or another meaningful connection—has attempted suicide. Such events can alter a young person’s emotional environment, increase distress, and influence perceptions of suicidal behavior. The researchers’ findings indicate that the timing of this exposure may matter: youths who had recently encountered a suicide attempt within their network appeared to face elevated mental-health risks during subsequent follow-up.

The association with later suicide-attempt onset is especially significant because it was observed prospectively. In a prospective cohort design, researchers assess participants before an outcome occurs and then follow them over time, allowing them to examine whether an earlier exposure is linked to a later event. This approach is stronger than a one-time survey for studying temporal order, because it can distinguish exposure that precedes a suicide attempt from exposure reported only after the attempt has already happened. Even so, a cohort study is observational rather than experimental. It can identify a meaningful relationship between events, but it cannot by itself prove that exposure to another person’s attempt directly caused a later attempt.

The researchers also observed higher depressive symptoms over time among youths exposed to suicide attempts in their social networks. Depression is not synonymous with suicide risk, and many young people with depressive symptoms never attempt suicide. However, persistent or worsening depression can reflect deteriorating emotional well-being and may coexist with hopelessness, withdrawal, sleep disruption, impaired concentration, or other warning signs. The longitudinal pattern reported in the study suggests that social-network exposure may be associated not only with an acute emotional reaction but also with a longer trajectory of psychological distress.

Several mechanisms could help explain the findings. A suicide attempt within a close network can produce grief, fear, confusion, anger, guilt, or a sense of responsibility. Young people may also become more aware of suicide as a possible response to overwhelming distress, particularly when the person who attempted suicide is perceived as similar to them or occupies an important role in their lives. Social learning theories propose that behavior can be influenced by observing people in one’s environment, while psychological theories of contagion describe how suicidal thoughts and behaviors may cluster within connected groups. These mechanisms are complex and do not imply that exposure inevitably leads to suicidal behavior. Most exposed youths will not attempt suicide, but the event may identify a group that deserves prompt support and careful follow-up.

The findings are relevant to schools, pediatric practices, mental-health services, youth organizations, and families. Traditional symptom-based screening typically asks whether a young person currently feels depressed, has suicidal thoughts, or has a personal history of self-harm. The study suggests that clinicians and other trusted adults may need to add a different kind of question: whether someone in the young person’s social network has recently attempted suicide. This information could reveal elevated vulnerability even when the youth does not yet report severe symptoms. A recent exposure should not be treated as proof that a young person is suicidal, but it could prompt a more comprehensive assessment of mood, safety, coping resources, access to support, and changes in behavior.

The implications extend to the way communities respond after a suicide attempt. News reports, school communications, social-media discussions, and informal conversations can shape how young people understand what happened. Responsible communication avoids graphic descriptions, speculation about motives, or language that portrays suicide as inevitable, heroic, or a solution to problems. Instead, communication can acknowledge the seriousness of the event, protect the privacy of the person involved, encourage help-seeking, and provide clear information about crisis resources. Because adolescents and young adults often process major events through digital networks, supportive messages should be designed to reach them in the spaces where they communicate without amplifying harmful details.

The study also highlights why screening cannot be reduced to a single questionnaire or a single clinical encounter. Suicide risk changes over time and is influenced by interacting factors, including mental-health symptoms, relationships, stressful experiences, substance use, prior self-harm, and access to care. Exposure to an attempt in a social network may be one additional variable that helps clinicians identify changes in risk earlier. A useful assessment would combine this information with direct, nonjudgmental questions about suicidal thoughts and behavior, while also identifying protective factors such as trusted relationships, a sense of connection, willingness to seek help, and access to appropriate treatment.

The researchers’ conclusion is therefore practical as well as scientific: asking about recent exposure to suicide attempts may help detect risk that symptom-based screening alone misses. The result does not support assuming that young people will imitate suicidal behavior, nor does it justify labeling exposed youths as dangerous or destined to develop mental illness. Rather, it supports treating exposure as a possible signal of disruption in a young person’s social and emotional environment. Early conversations, monitoring, and access to professional care may be especially important after such an event, when distress can remain hidden behind silence, loyalty, embarrassment, or concern for the person who attempted suicide. The study adds to growing evidence that suicide prevention must look beyond the individual and account for the networks in which young people live, learn, and recover.
