These problems can interfere with eating, speaking, swallowing, and medication adherence, while severe mucosal damage may create openings for infection and require hospitalization.

Modern supportive-care studies therefore often combine objective measurements with validated questionnaires and structured symptom scales. More sophisticated studies can use longitudinal models to distinguish temporary treatment effects from persistent toxicity and to identify which patients are most vulnerable before symptoms become severe.
