A new study has found that many personal care and household cleaning products contain chemicals that do not appear on their labels, raising concerns about whether consumers can reliably avoid substances linked to hormone disruption, allergies, reproductive harm, and other health risks. The analysis examined sunscreens, baby lotions, shampoos, soaps, and related products, revealing a widespread gap between what manufacturers disclose and what laboratory testing detects. The findings suggest that even shoppers who carefully select products marketed as “natural,” “non-toxic,” “organic,” or free from specific chemicals may still be exposed to them.

Researchers tested 113 products spanning 12 categories and detected an average of 51 chemicals in each item. By comparison, the average product listed only 16 ingredients on its label. In total, 98 percent of the products contained at least one chemical that was not disclosed, while 85 percent contained at least one undisclosed compound considered to have known or suspected health hazards. The specific brands and products analyzed are expected to be identified in a forthcoming report.

The study, published in Environment & Health, used nontargeted chemical analysis, a laboratory technique designed to search broadly rather than test only for a predetermined list of substances. In this approach, researchers separate and measure chemical signals produced by a sample, then compare those signals with reference databases and analytical standards. The method detected 3,141 chemical signals and enabled the researchers to identify 303 compounds with confirmed, probable, or tentative confidence. This broad screening strategy can reveal contaminants, impurities, degradation products, and manufacturing byproducts that conventional testing may overlook.

Among the chemicals detected were phthalates, parabens, fragrance compounds, silicone-related contaminants, and butylated hydroxytoluene, commonly known as BHT. Some members of these chemical groups have been associated in previous research with endocrine disruption, reproductive and developmental effects, allergic responses, obesity, diabetes, miscarriage, and certain cancers. The presence of a chemical in a product does not by itself establish that the product causes disease, since risk depends on concentration, exposure route, frequency of use, and individual susceptibility. However, the researchers say that repeated exposure across multiple products could make undisclosed chemicals an important public-health concern.

The analysis also found that more than one-quarter of the products contained chemicals that conflicted with claims made on their packaging or company websites. Some products promoted as “100% natural” contained synthetic chemicals. Items advertised as free of phthalates, parabens, silicones, fragrance, or oxybenzone nevertheless contained compounds from those categories. Products labeled “hypoallergenic” were found to contain known allergens or skin sensitizers. In one particularly striking example, products marketed as phthalate-free contained detectable phthalates, challenging the assumption that such claims guarantee the complete absence of the substances named.

Jenna Hua, a public-health researcher and senior author of the study, said the findings show that ingredient labels cannot always provide consumers with a complete picture of chemical exposure. “We found undisclosed harmful chemicals in products claiming to be free of them,” Hua said. “That means someone can carefully read ingredient lists, choose ‘clean’ products, and still end up exposed to the very chemicals they were trying to avoid.” The results were consistent across different product categories, price ranges, company sizes, and marketing strategies, suggesting that the issue is not limited to a small group of low-cost or poorly regulated items.

The researchers emphasize that undisclosed compounds are not necessarily added deliberately. Chemicals can enter products through contaminated raw materials, shared processing equipment, chemical reactions between ingredients, storage conditions, or interactions with packaging. Manufacturing changes and new suppliers may also alter a product’s chemical composition without triggering an immediate update to its ingredient list. In some cases, a detected substance may be present only at a very low concentration, while in others it may reflect a persistent contaminant or a breakdown product formed during production or storage.

The findings also raise questions about safety certifications and product-rating systems that rely primarily on manufacturer-provided ingredient lists. Such systems may be effective at evaluating intentionally added ingredients but can miss impurities and compounds introduced later in the supply chain. The authors recommend that finished, packaged products undergo routine nontargeted chemical screening alongside existing tests for stability, microbial contamination, preservatives, and performance. They argue that testing the final product, rather than relying solely on information about individual raw materials, would provide a more realistic assessment of what consumers encounter.

The study arrives as U.S. regulators face growing pressure to strengthen oversight of cosmetics and household products. The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 expanded the Food and Drug Administration’s authority over cosmetics, but routine testing of finished products for undisclosed chemical contaminants is generally not required. The researchers say regulatory systems should move beyond disclosure-based oversight and incorporate independent chemical verification. “People shouldn’t need a chemistry lab to know what they’re bringing into their homes or putting on their skin,” Hua said. “The next generation of product safety must look beyond the label and test what is actually there.”
