For millions of workers, the daily journey to work is an unavoidable tax on time and energy, and a new longitudinal study from Germany suggests that the price is paid not in wages but in workplace well-being. Researchers Stephan Bischof of the Federal Institute for Population Research, Laura Menze and Sophie-Charlotte Meyer of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health analysed biennial panel data from the German BAuA-Working Time Survey covering 2015 to 2023, tracking how changes in daily commuting duration relate to job satisfaction within the same individuals over time. Their findings, published in Social Indicators Research, show that longer commutes are consistently associated with lower job satisfaction, and that the damage appears to flow not from any compensating labour market rewards but from the adverse working conditions that long commutes drag in their wake.
The question of whether commuting helps or harms workers has long divided researchers. On one side stands a well-established economic argument: commuting is an investment. By widening the geographic range of jobs a worker can realistically accept, a longer commute should buy access to better-paid positions and jobs that actually match a worker’s qualifications. If workers are rational, they should only tolerate a longer journey when it is compensated by such returns, which ought to translate into greater satisfaction at work. On the other side, occupational health research paints a darker picture. Commuting is routinely ranked among the least enjoyable daily activities, associated with elevated stress, physiological strain and negative emotions, and that strain is known to spill over into the workplace, depleting the psychological resources workers need to cope with job demands.
What has been missing, the authors argue, is longitudinal evidence that can separate the effects of commuting itself from the characteristics of the people who end up with long commutes. Most previous studies relied on cross-sectional data, which cannot rule out the possibility that observed associations simply reflect selection: individuals with certain jobs, housing situations or stable personality traits may be both more likely to commute long and less satisfied with their work, regardless of the commute. Only a handful of studies, in the United Kingdom and China, had applied longitudinal designs, and none had systematically examined the mechanisms linking commuting duration to job satisfaction. The German study set out to fill both gaps at once.
The data come from the BAuA-Working Time Survey, a representative panel of the German working population conducted by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health since 2015. The researchers restricted their analytical sample to dependent employees aged 25 to 65 working at least ten hours per week, excluding the self-employed, remote-only workers, and extreme outliers reporting more than five hours of daily commuting. After listwise deletion of cases with missing values and removal of respondents observed in only a single wave, the final unbalanced panel comprised 26,692 person-year observations from 9,749 individuals across five waves. Crucially, the panel contains substantial within-person variation: more than three-quarters of respondents changed their commuting duration at least once over the study period, and nearly half crossed a 30-minute category boundary, providing the variation that fixed-effects models require.
Job satisfaction was measured with a single question about overall satisfaction with one’s work, answered on a four-point scale, while commuting duration captured the total daily round trip in minutes, analysed in ten-minute intervals. The researchers estimated both pooled ordinary least squares models, comparable to the cross-sectional designs of earlier work, and individual fixed-effects models, which control for all time-constant unobserved characteristics such as stable personality traits. In the pooled models, each additional ten minutes of daily commuting was associated with a reduction of roughly 0.009 points on the 0-to-3 satisfaction scale. The fixed-effects estimate was smaller but remained statistically significant at about 0.006 points per ten minutes, indicating that while part of the raw association reflects differences between people, a genuine within-person penalty survives. The authors are careful to note that the effect, though robust, is modest in substantive terms.
The more revealing part of the analysis concerns why commuting erodes satisfaction. The researchers tested two competing sets of potential mediators. The first captured labour market returns: gross monthly wages and qualification matching, the latter assessed by comparing each respondent’s educational level with the typical requirement level of their occupation. The second captured adverse working conditions: deadline and performance pressure, poor social support at work, and work-related emotional exhaustion measured with the established Oldenburg Burnout Inventory subscale. Using a regression-based mediation framework with Sobel tests of indirect effects, they found essentially no support for the compensation story. Although commuting duration was weakly positively related to wages, that association did not translate into higher job satisfaction, and qualification matching showed no meaningful link with commuting at all.
Adverse working conditions told a different story. Longer commutes were significantly associated with greater deadline and performance pressure and with higher emotional exhaustion, and both of these conditions were strongly negatively associated with job satisfaction. The estimated indirect effects through these channels were small in absolute terms but statistically significant, indicating that part of the commuting-satisfaction penalty operates through deteriorated working conditions. Poor social support at work was negatively related to job satisfaction but not to commuting duration, so it did not mediate the relationship. Even after accounting for all mediators simultaneously, a residual negative association between commuting and satisfaction remained, suggesting that other mechanisms, possibly outside the workplace, also contribute.
Robustness checks reinforced the core findings. Restricting the sample to workers continuously employed full-time left the results essentially unchanged, ruling out the possibility that part-time workers’ distinct schedules drove the association. Excluding the 2021 wave, when pandemic restrictions still shaped German commuting patterns, actually strengthened the negative association, suggesting that COVID-era disruptions may have attenuated rather than created the effect. The most striking subgroup result concerned education. Among workers without tertiary education, the negative association was stronger and clearly significant, with robust indirect effects operating through deadline pressure and emotional exhaustion. Among the tertiary-educated, the association was smaller, statistically insignificant, and largely unmediated. The authors suggest that highly educated workers more often enjoy flexible hours and remote work options that buffer commuting stress, and that their long commutes frequently serve as genuine gateways to specialised labour markets, whereas less-educated workers can typically find suitable jobs locally and experience long commutes as a pure, uncompensated burden.
The study’s limitations are acknowledged candidly. Reversed causality cannot be fully excluded, since higher wages may themselves induce longer commutes through housing choices, and time-varying unobserved confounders such as career ambition may still bias estimates. All measures are self-reported, the job satisfaction scale is short, and the data capture nothing about transport mode, commuting conditions or subjective perceptions of the journey. The biennial waves also cannot capture short-term fluctuations. The mediation framework, while transparent, is not a formal test of causal mediation, and the authors present their mechanism results as exploratory rather than definitive.
Nevertheless, the policy implications are pointed. If long commutes function primarily as a strain on the work experience rather than a source of compensating benefits, then reducing commuting burdens, improving local job accessibility, expanding remote and flexible work, and protecting workers from excessive time pressure become concrete levers for improving job satisfaction, particularly for less-educated workers who appear most vulnerable. With post-pandemic commuting distances in Germany reportedly increasing and remote work reshaping the geography of employment, the authors call for future research on how flexible working arrangements, unequally distributed across occupational groups, interact with commuting duration, and on how work-related and non-work-related mechanisms jointly shape the broader consequences of the daily journey to work.
