A review finds that Actinomycetota, formerly called Actinobacteria, contribute to nutrient cycling, soil aggregation and stability in plant–soil systems exposed to drought, salinity and heat. Drawing mainly on studies published from 2020 to 2025, the review identifies these gram-positive filamentous soil bacteria as potentially important mediators of plant–soil–microbiome interactions under climate and environmental stress, while emphasizing that their broader contribution to agroecosystem resilience remains to be established through wider field validation.

Actinomycetota produce compounds and enzymes that are associated with stress responses and soil function. These include osmoprotectants, exopolysaccharides, phytohormones and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase, or ACC deaminase. At crop level, the review reports that members of the genus Streptomyces improved physiological performance under drought conditions. It also describes evidence that Nocardiopsis alba modulates rhizosphere ionic balance under salinity stress. These observations concern particular organisms and experimental conditions; they do not establish that adding Actinomycetota to agricultural soil will consistently increase yields or protect crops across different environments.

The review presents Actinomycetota as multifunctional participants in agroecosystem processes. Their exopolysaccharides contribute to soil aggregation and rhizosphere stabilization, while their metabolic activities participate in nutrient cycling and organic-matter turnover. Pathogen suppression is another function attributed to the group. Together, these roles connect microbial activity with plant performance and soil conditions. The central interpretation is that particular bacterial traits may help plants and soil systems respond to environmental pressure, but the evidence reviewed does not yet demonstrate a uniform benefit across farm-scale agroecosystems.

Several limitations constrain the current evidence, according to the review. Large-scale field validation remains limited, and formulations based on these microorganisms may be unstable. The ecosystem-level influence of Actinomycetota on greenhouse-gas emissions is also incompletely understood. The authors identify three priorities for future work: integrative, multi-omics-guided characterization of functional traits, climate-relevant field experimentation and system-level assessment. Their proposed direction is to connect microbial functions with outcomes across agroecosystems, rather than treating findings from individual organisms as sufficient proof of broad climate resilience.
