A new study published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications examines how digital agriculture and high-quality agricultural development influence one another across China. Using data from 31 Chinese provinces covering 2013 to 2023, researchers Pengchao Zhou, Erling Li, and Weitao Ai built a theoretical framework for the coordinated interaction between the two and then tested it empirically, analyzing dynamic interactive effects, levels of coordinated development, and the mechanisms behind regional disparities.

The analysis shows that the development levels of both digital agriculture and high-quality agricultural development improved steadily over the study period, yet significant imbalances and inadequacies persist in their advancement. The authors also identified a mutually reinforcing dynamic interactive effect between the two: each supports the other’s growth over time. In addition, the development of each exhibits cumulative effects and path dependence, meaning that past trajectories shape current performance.

A central measure in the study is the coupling coordination degree, an indicator of how well two systems advance together. This measure increased continuously between digital agriculture and high-quality agricultural development, but overall it remains at a primary coordination stage. In other words, the two systems are becoming more aligned, yet their integration is still at an early level rather than a mature one.

The coordination also follows a distinct spatial pattern that the researchers describe as eastern regions leading, central regions stable, and western regions catching up. This east-to-west gradient highlights that provincial progress in linking digital tools with higher-quality agricultural outcomes is uneven across the country, with the western provinces improving but still trailing the coastal east.

To explain why coordination differs across regions, the study identifies four primary factors behind the regional differences: human resources, financial services, government support, and transportation logistics. These influences account for much of the variation in how tightly digital agriculture and high-quality agricultural development are coupled in a given province, pointing to the conditions under which the two systems reinforce each other most effectively.

According to the authors, the findings provide policy guidance for fostering a virtuous cycle between China’s digital agriculture and high-quality agricultural development. Because the interaction is mutually reinforcing, measures that strengthen either side can feed back into the other, while attention to the four regional drivers may help narrow the spatial gaps in coordination.

The study also positions its results beyond China, suggesting that the country’s experience offers insights and practices for other countries promoting agricultural modernization. As an early-release, peer-reviewed article carrying a permanent DOI, the paper is citable now, though the published version is subject to further edits before the final Version of Record replaces it.

For researchers tracking agricultural digitalization, the work adds a decade-long provincial picture of how digital and quality-oriented agricultural development evolve together, quantifying both the steady gains and the persistent imbalances. The combination of interactive-effect analysis and coupling coordination measurement offers a template for assessing whether digital transformation in agriculture is genuinely translating into higher-quality development, or whether the two remain only loosely synchronized in particular regions.
