Research from the University of East Anglia is offering a more nuanced explanation of how memory changes with age, suggesting that growing older does not simply erase the past. Instead, ageing appears to alter the way people retrieve and describe personal experiences, gradually shifting recollection away from vivid, moment-specific details and toward broader knowledge about what happened. Older adults may still preserve the overall meaning of an event, its significance, and the lessons associated with it, even as sensory details such as sights, sounds, emotions, and precise moments become harder to recover. The study also shows that memory becomes particularly vulnerable when people must rapidly switch between different kinds of autobiographical recollection, revealing that the challenge may lie not only in storing memories but also in controlling access to them.
The research, led by Professor Louis Renoult of UEA’s School of Psychology, examined autobiographical memory, the system that allows people to recall experiences from their own lives. These memories exist along a spectrum. At one end are highly specific events that happened once at a particular time and place, such as a birthday party, a first day at school, or an unexpected conversation. At the other end are categoric memories, which represent repeated or generalised experiences, such as commuting to work, shopping at a familiar market, or regularly meeting friends. Remembering a specific birthday party requires reconstructing a distinct episode, while recalling a daily commute may involve a more abstract summary built from many similar occasions. The researchers wanted to determine how effectively younger and older adults could move between these retrieval modes.
A total of 74 people participated in the study, including 37 university students and 37 older adults recruited from the community. Participants were given cue words, such as “market,” and asked to generate memories in response. During one part of the task, they recalled specific and categoric memories separately and in sequence, allowing researchers to measure performance when attention remained focused on a single type of recollection. In another part, participants had to alternate repeatedly between the two forms. This switching condition placed greater demands on cognitive control because participants had to suppress the currently active retrieval strategy and initiate another one. The researchers assessed both whether participants followed the instructions correctly and how richly they described the memories they produced.
The results showed that switching between memory types imposed a cost on participants of all ages. Performance declined when people had to alternate between specific and categoric autobiographical memories rather than concentrate on one type at a time. This finding suggests that memory retrieval is not a completely automatic process. It involves executive control mechanisms that help the brain establish a goal, select an appropriate search strategy, monitor the response, and shift direction when the task changes. The cost of switching is therefore comparable to the difficulties people can experience when moving between other forms of complex thinking. Even when the memories themselves remain available, changing the mental framework used to access them can make retrieval less accurate or less efficient.
Older adults experienced a distinctive disadvantage under these switching conditions. They were less accurate when asked to retrieve categoric memories, such as general or repeated experiences, while alternating between retrieval modes. In contrast, their ability to recall specific events was comparatively less affected by the switching demand. The result is important because it challenges the assumption that all autobiographical memory declines in the same way. Repeated experiences may appear simpler than unique events, but they require the brain to search across overlapping episodes and construct a general pattern. When this process must be coordinated with a rapid change in retrieval strategy, older adults may have greater difficulty selecting the correct level of generality and avoiding confusion among similar experiences.
The content of the memories revealed an even more striking age-related pattern. When older participants recalled specific events, their narratives contained fewer episodic details than those of younger adults. Episodic details are the elements that anchor a memory to a particular occurrence: the visual appearance of a place, the sound of a voice, the physical sensations present at the time, or the emotions felt during the event. These details help transform a general account into a vivid recollection of something that happened on one identifiable occasion. Older adults, however, provided more semantic information, including general knowledge, interpretations, evaluations, and conclusions about the event. A similar pattern appeared when they described categoric memories, indicating that the shift toward meaning and general knowledge was not limited to one retrieval condition.
This distinction between episodic and semantic information is central to understanding the findings. Episodic memory depends heavily on recovering contextual features that bind an event to a time, place, and personal perspective. Semantic memory, by contrast, stores knowledge and interpretations that are less dependent on a particular moment. The researchers suggest that age-related changes in brain systems supporting contextual retrieval and cognitive control may contribute to the difference. Networks involving the hippocampus are widely associated with the binding and reconstruction of episodic details, while broader frontal systems help organise retrieval, maintain task goals, and switch between strategies. The study does not establish that damage to any one structure caused the observed effects, but its results are consistent with the view that ageing changes the balance between detailed reconstruction and semanticised recall.
Rather than portraying older memory as a diminished version of younger memory, the findings suggest that it may be reorganised. Generalised memories can be less vivid, but they are not necessarily useless or inaccurate in every context. By retaining the broader meaning of experiences, older adults may draw on accumulated knowledge to recognise patterns, make decisions, communicate efficiently, and apply lessons from the past. This reliance on semantic information may help explain why people can lose some of the fine-grained details of an event while preserving its importance or the knowledge gained from it. In everyday life, however, situations that demand rapid mental switching may expose the limitations of this system. Storytelling, problem-solving, decision-making, and conversations that require moving between a particular example and a general conclusion could become more demanding when cognitive control is under pressure.
The University of East Anglia team says the work may help guide future approaches to supporting healthy cognitive ageing. Interventions could potentially focus not only on strengthening memory storage but also on improving retrieval flexibility, helping people shift deliberately between detailed and general forms of recall. The findings also suggest that assessments of age-related memory should measure more than the number of facts a person can remember. The richness, specificity, accuracy, and type of information produced may reveal different aspects of cognitive health.
