Led by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa in Portugal and the European Journalism Centre in the Netherlands, the Journalism Science Alliance bridges the worlds of journalism and scientific research, through a two-year programme of grants. After a first call for proposals in 2025, the 2026 call closed on 23 March, receiving 177 applications. An independent jury selected the winning proposals.

Each selected project is led by a journalist and co-led by a scientist, associated with media outlets and research organisations in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Ukraine. When considering all the participants in these projects, the total rises to 24 countries. Just as the 2025 grantees are finishing their projects and publishing their stories, the newly selected teams will now have eight months to complete their own work. Beyond funding, all selected teams benefit from expert mentoring, specialized training, and unique networking opportunities.

Since its launch, the Journalism Science Alliance has received a total of 339 applications and selected 49 projects, with a combined budget of almost two million euros.”This milestone reflects the growing global demand for rigorous, science-based investigative journalism,” says the JSA team.
