New Model Links Crisis Stabilisation to Social Adaptation in Psychological Support

Researchers have proposed a conceptual model of psychological support that connects crisis stabilisation, self-regulation and social adaptation, presenting it as a theoretical framework for coordinating mental health assistance during crises. The work, published in BMC Psychology, is explicitly theoretical: the authors state that its pathways and anticipated outcomes are propositions awaiting empirical evaluation, not tested results.

The study used a theoretical-analytical design combining a narrative synthesis of published literature, a comparison of five established crisis support frameworks and the development of a new conceptual model. The comparison drew distinctions between the structured response of crisis intervention, the five essential elements of mass trauma support, cognitive-behavioural mechanisms, resilience trajectories and family stress adaptation. Rather than treating these approaches as competing alternatives, the synthesis organised their contributions into three levels: psychophysiological, organisational and interventional.

According to the authors, these levels operate through three processes: stabilisation, corrective-developmental work and resource activation. Within the model, social adaptation is conceptualised as the capacity to sustain or resume meaningful relationships, everyday roles and participation in a changing social environment.

The practical contribution described is a framework for coordinating four stages of assistance: assessment, immediate help, individually indicated psychological work and follow-up. The abstract reports no clinical trial, intervention data or measured outcomes, describing the model's pathways and anticipated outcomes as theoretical propositions for empirical evaluation.

The authors are candid about the limitations of the work. They note that selective source coverage and contextual heterogeneity constrain generalisation, meaning the model was built from a chosen body of literature and may not transfer across settings with different services, cultures or crisis types. They call for future comparative studies to evaluate the model’s feasibility, cultural acceptability, effects on social functioning and the contribution of its individual components.

For researchers and service planners, the article offers a structured map of how existing crisis support ideas might fit together rather than evidence that any particular intervention works. Its value lies in generating testable propositions: whether coordinated assessment, immediate assistance, targeted psychological work and follow-up improve social adaptation, and whether the psychophysiological, organisational and interventional levels interact as the model proposes. Until such studies are carried out, the framework should be read as a planning tool and a research agenda, not as a validated treatment approach for people in crisis.
