New control strategy keeps quadrotors on track under denial-of-service attacks

Quadrotor drones depend on a continuous stream of commands travelling from the controller to their actuators, and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks can sever that link, preventing timely control updates and degrading trajectory-tracking accuracy. A study published in Scientific Reports proposes a control strategy designed to keep these unmanned aerial vehicles tracking their trajectories under such attacks, while external disturbances and limited communication bandwidth add further complications. The approach combines several techniques into one framework.

The researchers first designed a fractional-order sliding surface with nonsingular dual-power feedback, which shapes how the position and attitude subsystems of the quadrotor respond during flight. On top of this, they constructed a generalized super-twisting controller, a design intended to enhance disturbance rejection and alleviate chattering. A central challenge in remote drone operation is that communication bandwidth is limited, so transmitting every control update can be wasteful.

To address this, the team developed a dynamic event-triggered mechanism (ETM) with a strictly positive threshold floor. Rather than sending commands continuously, the system transmits updates only when needed, reducing unnecessary command transmissions while preserving a guaranteed minimum spacing between them. The strategy also includes a plan for surviving outages.

An acknowledgment-based retry strategy is introduced to restore command updates after a communication interruption, and during the outage itself the actuator retains the most recently received command. This means the drone continues operating on the last valid instruction until the link is re-established. The theoretical core of the paper is a stability proof.

Within the prescribed operating domain, Lyapunov analysis establishes practical fixed-time stability under DoS attacks for the closed-loop system, on a prescribed compact set of initial conditions. The authors also derived a strictly positive lower bound on successive transmission attempts. Numerical simulations were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

The abstract does not report experimental flight tests on physical hardware, so the results at this stage represent a validated design and simulation study rather than demonstrated real-world performance. By combining fractional-order sliding-mode design, super-twisting control, event-triggered transmission and a retry protocol in a single framework with formal fixed-time guarantees, the study offers a mathematically grounded template for quadrotor tracking in adversarial communication environments, pending further validation beyond simulation.
