Generative artificial intelligence is reshaping how university students learn, but a new study suggests that the key to healthy adoption may lie in a familiar human trait: mindfulness. Researchers surveyed 370 undergraduate and postgraduate students to understand why some learners embrace AI tools in ways that support both their studies and their well-being. The study, published in Discover Sustainability, extends the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explain students’ acceptance and use of generative AI for sustainable learning.
The team added mindfulness as a psychological antecedent and student well-being as an outcome, aiming to capture not just whether students use generative AI, but how thoughtfully they do so. Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with the SmartPLS software, a statistical approach suited to testing models with multiple linked constructs. The findings supported the proposed relationships.
Mindfulness was positively associated with the TAM constructs, meaning that students who reported higher levels of mindful awareness also showed greater acceptance of generative AI within the model. Crucially, the analysis also revealed significant indirect effects. The TAM constructs acted as mediators, helping explain the pathway between mindfulness and student well-being.
In other words, mindful students did not simply feel better about AI; their acceptance of the technology appeared, within the model, to be the mechanism linking awareness to well-being. The authors frame these results in terms of sustainable learning, and they state that the extended framework offers a more comprehensive perspective on generative AI acceptance in higher education, with theoretical and practical implications for developing ethical, human-centred, and sustainable learning environments.
As with any survey-based structural equation model, the results describe associations within the studied population rather than proven causal effects, and the article is being shared ahead of the final Version of Record, so the text remains subject to further edits.
