Optica has announced the winners of its 2026 Optica i4 Prize, spotlighting leadership that accelerates progress across the optics and photonics ecosystem. The Individual Achievement Prize goes to Michael Hurlston, President and CEO of Lumentum, while TRUMPF receives the Corporate Achievement Prize. The recognition reflects Optica’s focus on Innovation, Integrity, Inclusion, and Impact—values aimed at translating technical advances into measurable industry benefits.

Hurlston has steered Lumentum through a period of rapid expansion since taking the CEO role in February 2025. Under his leadership, the company has reinforced its position in optical and photonic technologies used by communications networks and cloud infrastructure, areas that are under intense demand as bandwidth requirements continue to surge. The growing reliance on photonics for high-performance data transport places companies like Lumentum at the center of modern network architecture.

Beyond communications, the article emphasizes the connection to the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem. As AI training and inference scale, data movement becomes a dominant constraint, increasing the need for photonic components that can deliver speed, efficiency, and reliability at scale. The award frames industrial lasers and photonics-enabled manufacturing as key drivers of economic competitiveness, particularly in semiconductor production and advanced manufacturing environments where precision and throughput are critical.

The company’s long-term investment in research and technological excellence is presented as a reason photonics has become a foundational enabling technology for multiple sectors, including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and microelectronics. With photonics increasingly embedded in AI-enabled manufacturing and smart factory workflows, the nomination underscores how industrial leadership can amplify technical breakthroughs across the supply chain.

More than 30 nominations were evaluated by the 2026 Optica i4 Prize Jury, drawn from the Optica Corporate Engagement Council. Chaired by Reinhard Voelkel and including members such as Michael Lebby, Aleksandra Boskovic, Simon Schwinger, Joseph Spilman, and Natarajan Subrahmanyan, the jury selected the recipients following a rigorous review process.

Optica’s Chief Technology Officer, Jose Pozo, praised Hurlston for combining technological vision with business leadership, noting the value created for customers, employees, shareholders, and the broader photonics community. Pozo also commended TRUMPF for pairing innovation with visionary strategy, producing solutions that advance manufacturing and strengthen the global photonics ecosystem.

The i4 Prize awards will be presented during the Global Photonics Economic Forum (GPEF) 2026 in Málaga, Spain, on 24 September 2026. The ceremony will be hosted by Caroline Boudoux, Chair of the Optica Awards Council, with presentations involving senior Optica leadership and TRUMPF representatives.
