A laboratory materials study reports that a hydrothermally synthesized WO3/Fe2O3/graphene oxide ternary heterostructure, designated WFG, produced 25.26 mmol g−1 of hydrogen under visible-light irradiation over 10 hours. This corresponded to a hydrogen evolution rate of 2.526 mmol g−1 h−1 in a Na2S/Na2SO3 sacrificial system.
The researchers prepared the WFG nanocomposite through a hydrothermal process. According to the study abstract, combining graphene oxide with the WO3/Fe2O3 heterostructure improved visible-light absorption and interfacial charge separation. The material had a reported optical band gap of 1.96 eV, while photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Mott–Schottky analysis, and valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supported the authors’ interpretation that reduced charge recombination and favorable interfacial electronic interactions contributed to its observed photocatalytic activity.
WFG retained its effectiveness over six consecutive photocatalytic cycles, indicating stability under the tested conditions. Post-reaction X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the material after cycling and further supported its reported stability. The study also estimated an apparent quantum efficiency of approximately 4.41%, indicating use of visible-light photons under the measurement conditions.
These findings are based on the published abstract, which does not provide the full experimental protocol, control comparisons, uncertainty estimates, or performance under conditions other than the stated visible-light and sacrificial-agent system. The reported results therefore demonstrate hydrogen production by WFG in laboratory testing, but the abstract alone does not establish performance without sacrificial reagents, establish long-term operational stability beyond six cycles, or assess practical scale-up. The authors characterized WFG as a potential photocatalyst for visible-light-induced hydrogen production.
