In a groundbreaking stride towards reshaping the sports health landscape of Hong Kong, the Li Ka Shing (LKS) Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has officially launched the ‘HKUMed Sports Health’ initiative. This visionary program aims to unite multiple disciplines—spanning sports development, medical education, clinical services, and cutting-edge research—in an integrative approach designed to foster a healthier, more active society. The launch event took place on May 14, marking the beginning of what promises to be a transformative chapter in the domain of sports medicine and public health education.

Professor Chak-sing Lau, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine at HKU, underscored the critical intersection between regular physical activity and chronic disease prevention during the inauguration. “The HKSAR Government’s emphasis on sports development as a vehicle for community cohesion has created a fertile ground for such endeavors,” said Professor Lau. He highlighted the importance of physical activity as a cornerstone of health maintenance, asserting that the initiative embodies HKUMed’s commitment to advancing comprehensive primary healthcare through pioneering sports health ecosystems informed by the latest scientific insights.

Central to this initiative is the integration of sports science and rehabilitation within a clinical framework that prioritizes evidence-based interventions. Professor Wong Tak-man, Clinical Professor in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at HKUMed, elaborated on the initiative’s mission to catalyze innovations that bear real-world impact. He emphasized the role of combined expertise in sports science, rehabilitation, and clinical research as the driving force behind the development of effective strategies to promote physical activity and manage sports-related health conditions. This multifaceted approach aims to extend beyond traditional healthcare boundaries, delivering tangible benefits to both athletes and the general population.

Education forms a pivotal element of the HKUMed Sports Health framework. By embedding sports health education into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) curriculum, the Faculty ensures future medical professionals are equipped with comprehensive knowledge about exercise physiology, adaptation, and its vital role in disease prevention and rehabilitation. Students engage in hands-on clinical training across orthopaedic and traumatology clinics, fostering a practical understanding of musculoskeletal health issues. The curriculum further incorporates workshops that impart skills in exercise prescription and musculoskeletal ultrasound—toolkits that are critical for a preventive and rehabilitative approach in patient care.

Moreover, the program extends its clinical training through a specialty clerkship at The University of Hong Kong – Shenzhen Hospital, fostering cross-border collaboration and exposure to diverse patient populations and healthcare systems. This international component not only broadens students’ clinical acumen but also enhances scholarly exchange, contributing to a more robust and interconnected healthcare academic network.

The initiative also champions community engagement as a vehicle to translate academic knowledge into real-world health benefits. Dr. Amy Ng Pui-pui, Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, described plans to mobilize students within District Health Centres, enabling them to address community-specific health needs through outreach programs. These activities will promote healthy lifestyles by encouraging regular exercise, directly influencing public health outcomes. Additionally, HKUMed’s existing minor in Kinesiology for undergraduates complements the initiative by providing interdisciplinary educational pathways focused on the science of human movement.

HKUMed plans to strengthen strategic partnerships with reputable educational institutions worldwide. This network will enhance sports medicine education and facilitate scholarly collaborations, particularly in clinical internships, joint research projects, and the dissemination of innovative practices through symposiums and seminars. By fostering these academic alliances, HKUMed aims to stay at the forefront of interdisciplinary advancements and expand the reach of its sports health mission.

The newly established clinic dedicated to sports-related injuries, cardiac fitness, and rehabilitation embodies the initiative’s translational ethos. Combining clinical expertise from cardiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, orthopaedics, and kinesiology, the facility is designed to cater to both elite athletes and community sports enthusiasts alike. The clinic serves as a hub for cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, including advanced imaging, tailored rehabilitation protocols, and cardiac fitness assessments aimed at optimizing athletic performance and health outcomes.

An exciting aspect of the program involves exploring on-site medical support capabilities for major sports competitions and community events. This proactive deployment of specialized medical teams during sporting activities aims to ensure immediate and expert care for sports-related injuries, thereby minimizing complications and supporting athlete safety. This initiative aligns HKUMed’s clinical and academic expertise with frontline sports health needs, reinforcing its role as a leader in this emerging field.

The HKUMed Sports Health initiative is emblematic of a broader transformation in healthcare paradigms, shifting from reactive treatment towards preventive and participatory care models. By systematically incorporating sports science principles into medical education, clinical practice, and community health programs, HKUMed is fostering a culture of physical vitality that spans all demographics. Its comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach serves as a blueprint for integrating academic rigor with community impact.

Furthermore, the Faculty’s commitment to knowledge exchange ensures that cutting-edge scientific findings are effectively translated into public health strategies and educational curricula. By leveraging symposiums and seminars, HKUMed facilitates vibrant dialogues among researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, accelerating the adoption of innovations in sports medicine and health promotion.

As the initiative gains momentum, it promises to generate significant advancements in managing chronic diseases through exercise-based rehabilitation and preventive care strategies. This approach aligns with global health trends that champion lifestyle medicine as a cornerstone of modern healthcare. By fostering expertise and innovation in sports health, HKUMed is not only addressing pressing public health challenges but also setting new clinical and educational standards that resonate far beyond Hong Kong.

In sum, the HKUMed Sports Health initiative represents a pioneering effort to bridge multiple sectors of sports development, medical research, and clinical application in service of a healthier society. Through strategic collaboration, educational innovation, and dedicated clinical services, HKUMed is poised to lead this dynamic and vital field into a future where physical activity and health are inextricably linked and universally accessible.
