The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has once again demonstrated its outstanding prowess in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship, securing a remarkable total of 19 awards at the prestigious 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Among these accolades, HKU proudly claimed the coveted Outstanding Organisation Award, a testament to the university’s deep-rooted commitment to fostering innovative thinking and pioneering research among its student community. This sweeping success encompassed a wide array of honors, including one Grand Prize, two First Prizes, two Second Prizes, six Third Prizes, and seven Merit Prizes, exemplifying the breadth and depth of talent and ingenuity nurtured within the university.

The projects that propelled HKU to such acclaim spanned a remarkable spectrum of cutting-edge disciplines. From revolutionary biomedical technologies to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence applications in precision medicine, the diversity of innovations underscored the university’s interdisciplinary excellence. Significant advancements were also noted in sustainable construction engineering and intelligent healthcare technologies, areas critical for addressing contemporary societal challenges. The Grand Prize-winning project introduced an innovative nasal spray technology designed to act as a rapid intervention tool for ischemic stroke, a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability globally. Conducted under the expert supervision of Professor Shing Fung Chow from HKU’s Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy alongside the Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre, this nasal spray employs nano-sized particles to deliver therapeutic agents directly to the brain via the nasal route. This method offers a promising alternative to conventional treatment paradigms by potentially reducing brain damage by more than 80 percent in preclinical animal models.

The mechanism underlying this nasal spray involves the concept of “nose-to-brain” drug delivery, an emerging frontier in pharmacology that bypasses the blood-brain barrier—a formidable obstacle for many conventional drug treatments. Utilizing nano-powder formulations enhances the rapid absorption and targeted delivery of medication, facilitating timely intervention during the critical acute phase of ischemic stroke. This technology represents a paradigm shift aimed at mitigating the often irreversible neurological deficits caused by delayed reperfusion therapies, thereby holding promise for vastly improved patient outcomes once clinical trials commence.

Complementing this biomedical innovation, the First Prize-winning project tackled the profound challenge of drug development efficacy in oncology. It integrated cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies with a precision medicine platform leveraging patient-derived organoid models, supervised by Assistant Professor Rio Ryohichi Sugimura of the School of Biomedical Sciences at HKUMed. This platform addresses the notorious variability in clinical responses caused by patient heterogeneity, a major bottleneck where nearly 90% of oncology drugs that succeed in animal models fail in human trials. By synthesizing AI-driven drug discovery with immunised and vascularised cancer organoid validation ex vivo, the project delivers an unprecedented simulation of the human tumor microenvironment.

This fusion of AI and organoid technology accelerates the preclinical pipeline substantially, enabling pharmaceutical manufacturers to screen and optimise candidate drugs with far greater predictive accuracy. Furthermore, it supports the tailoring of personalised cancer treatments that are finely tuned to the unique biological characteristics of individual patients. The approach not only promises to reduce the time and cost associated with drug development but also represents a leap forward in bringing targeted therapies directly to those who stand to benefit most, ultimately improving survival rates and patient quality of life.

The distinguished judging panel at this year’s competition was composed of 42 eminent academics, professors, and industry experts drawn from Hong Kong’s leading academic institutions, alongside representatives from business and venture capital sectors. Their rigorous evaluation process focussed on identifying innovative solutions with significant, sustainable social impact, reinforcing the competition’s reputation as a prime platform for catalyzing high-value entrepreneurial ventures from academia into the marketplace.

Organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, this annual competition has grown into a flagship event championing student ingenuity across local universities. Not only does it provide a fertile ground for idea exchange and mentorship, but it also opens pathways for winning teams to represent Hong Kong on regional and international stages. These include participation in esteemed contests such as the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition, the renowned “Challenge Cup” series, and global innovation expositions hosted in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and South Korea.
