A review published in the Journal of Materials Science surveys the state of two-dimensional materials for optoelectronics, covering graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and black phosphorus. The article, authored by Syed Aamir Hussain, Muhammad Kamran Shehzad, Javeria Shah and Lei Chen, was published on 23 October 2026 and brings together recent progress in the synthesis, key characteristics and striking properties of these atomically thin nanomaterials.

The appeal of 2D materials lies in their atomic layer thickness, tunable optoelectronic properties, broad optical response and excellent compatibility with other photonic systems, qualities that have attracted significant interest in photonics, electronics and optoelectronics over the past few years. According to the review, the optical response of 2D materials may be modified by adjusting carrier density through electrical or optical methods, for example by shifting the Fermi level or changing nonlinear absorption, which turns them into nanostructures adaptable for optical modulation.

The authors organise the review around several themes: recent progress in the field, synthesis methods and the challenges linked with synthesis, and the key characteristics of 2D nanomaterials. They also examine how different physical, chemical and optical properties of 2D materials affect biosensing performance, toxicity, thermal therapy and drug delivery, extending the discussion beyond purely electronic applications into biomedical territory.

The review closes with an assessment of the challenges associated with 2D materials based on the current situation and future status, together with possible solutions, potential opportunities and future innovation in different applications. As a review article, it synthesises existing literature rather than presenting new experimental results, and the full text is available behind Springer’s subscription access.

Subject of Research: A review of two-dimensional materials, including graphene, TMDs and black phosphorus, for next-generation optoelectronic applications.
