Traceability technologies were associated with modestly higher farm-gate prices and stronger export compliance among smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to an exploratory systematic review and meta-analysis of 41 studies. The pooled analysis estimated a small-to-moderate association with farm-gate prices, with Hedges’ g = 0.38 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.24 to 0.52, while adoption was associated with 2.48-fold higher odds of meeting export requirements, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.86 to 3.32. The findings indicate a measurable relationship between traceability adoption and the reported outcomes, but they do not establish that the technologies caused the price or compliance differences. Institutional organisation, particularly cooperative membership, was more strongly associated with benefits than the choice of technology.

Edamisan Stephen Ikuemonisan and Taiwo Ejiola Mafimisebi systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts and AgEcon Search for research published from 2015 through 2025. Of the 41 eligible studies, 34 reported farm-gate price outcomes and 23 reported export-compliance outcomes. The technologies examined included blockchain, Internet of Things systems, QR codes and mobile-based traceability. The investigators used random-effects meta-analysis to pool associations, mixed-effects meta-regression to assess whether technology type or institutional organisation moderated the results, and publication-bias diagnostics comprising Egger’s test, trim-and-fill and small-study meta-regression. Effect sizes were reported as Hedges’ g, with the study applying Cohen’s conventions for interpretation.

Cooperative organisation was the dominant effect modifier in the analysis. Cooperative members showed a moderate-to-large estimated association with farm-gate prices, with g = 0.53 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.38 to 0.68, compared with g = 0.19 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.02 to 0.36 among individual farmers. Exporter-controlled traceability systems were associated with significantly lower price benefits, with a meta-regression coefficient of −0.18 and p = 0.027. These results identify organisational arrangements as prominent correlates of the outcomes, but the review did not establish the causal mechanisms responsible for the differences. They also show why a pooled average alone would conceal important variation: farmers participating through cooperatives had an estimated price association nearly three times as large as that observed for individual farmers.

None of the technology categories differed significantly from basic digital tools after institutional context was taken into account. The estimated price effects were g = 0.29 for blockchain, 0.52 for Internet of Things systems and 0.21 for QR codes, compared with 0.44 for basic digital tools. The Internet of Things estimate was described as provisional because it was based on only four studies. No specific technology therefore demonstrated a clear advantage over the alternatives in the available evidence. Variation among studies was also substantial: heterogeneity was 82.4% for the farm-gate price outcomes and 67.3% for export compliance, indicating that the pooled estimates did not represent every setting in the same way. The findings support the authors’ conclusion that the observed benefits were not intrinsic to a particular traceability technology.

Publication-bias diagnostics also required the pooled result to be interpreted cautiously. Egger’s test produced an intercept of 1.84 with p = 0.008, signalling the presence of publication bias. After trim-and-fill adjustment, the farm-gate price estimate fell from 0.38 to 0.31, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.17 to 0.45, but remained positive. The evidence base itself was limited in scale and geographic reach: 80.5% of the studies involved fewer than 1,000 farmers, while Kenya accounted for 34.1% of studies, Ghana 14.6% and Nigeria 12.2%. Pilot-scale projects and this geographic concentration limit how broadly the results can be applied across Sub-Saharan Africa’s varied agricultural systems. Overall, the review links traceability adoption to modest price benefits and improved export readiness, while the data suggest that cooperative-led organisation may matter more than technological sophistication. The high heterogeneity, detected publication bias and predominance of small pilots mean the estimates should be treated as a pooled research signal rather than a guaranteed benefit for every farmer, technology or export chain.
