The study addressed a monitoring gap. Central Asian countries have adopted the 2030 Agenda, but the source notes that progress monitoring at the subnational level remains limited because integrated and comparable analyses are scarce. To calculate the SDG index, the team estimated 61 official and derived indicators at the subnational level.

The researchers also analyzed spatial associations among the three sustainable development dimensions represented in the index. The supplied abstract does not provide the individual association estimates, component scores, uncertainty intervals or a complete ranking of regions. The results identified Kazakhstan’s regions as having a high level of sustainable development performance.

By contrast, regions in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan exhibited the lowest performance levels within the assessment. These findings describe geographic differences rather than a change over time: the reported study establishes the relative performance of the regional units included, but the available evidence does not show whether progress improved or deteriorated between years. The authors said that understanding sustainable development at the subnational level can enhance authorities’ ability to develop implementation strategies and monitor progress, potentially supporting regional planning.

Although it combines 61 estimated indicators, it is not a direct statement that every individual Sustainable Development Goal or target has been met, and the available material does not identify which policies produced the observed differences. The research was presented as peer-reviewed, accepted open-access work published on 15 September 2026 in an early version that remained subject to further editorial changes before the final version of record.
