New data from the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll suggests that many families are missing a key milestone as their children move into adulthood: the practical ability to manage everyday healthcare. The transition at age 18 changes legal responsibility, but not—by itself—the skills required to navigate appointments, insurance, and personal medical decision-making.

Nearly one in six parents reported that their young adult (ages 18–25) handles none of the basic healthcare tasks independently, including scheduling visits and maintaining essential information such as family health history. While many young adults can communicate with providers during appointments and follow instructions, fewer can take the lead in determining when care is needed or coordinating their healthcare systems.

Parents most often attributed this gap to two factors: limited knowledge of what to do and insufficient experience. Fewer parents pointed to maturity concerns or reluctance to take responsibility. The findings highlight that “healthcare independence” behaves like a trainable set of behaviors—requiring repeated, structured practice rather than a one-time handoff.

Over half of parents rated themselves highly for preparing their young adult to take health responsibility. Yet those who rated their preparation lower were substantially more likely to report that their child lacked basic care-management skills. These parents also more frequently identified unhealthy lifestyle habits as a current or potential health issue.

A central theme in the poll is that everyday behaviors worry parents more than chronic diagnoses. More than half cited excessive screen time, while roughly four in 10 mentioned stress, insufficient sleep, unhealthy eating patterns, and physical inactivity. Parents also expressed concern about the cost of maintaining healthy routines.

From a technical perspective, these results point to a behavioral transition problem: health outcomes in young adulthood are influenced by both healthcare navigation capacity and modifiable lifestyle exposures. In other words, competence in system navigation and competence in daily self-management appear to be linked, even when formal medical conditions are not the primary concern.

The poll also indicates where preparation efforts may be working best—during healthcare visits. Parents reported success in encouraging active participation such as completing medical forms, understanding insurance basics, and communicating directly with clinicians. Looking ahead, researchers note that with time, parents may not have access to medical records or the ability to speak with providers without the young adult’s permission.

For families managing mental health or chronic conditions, the study emphasizes early education about condition-related specifics—medication names, prescription renewal, visit frequency, and symptom triggers. The poll’s data collectively suggest that gradual, competency-building preparation may improve both preventive behaviors and healthcare autonomy.
