Venture-Backed Maternal Health Startups Confront Persistent Maternal Health Crisis

Venture capital firms have poured money into maternal health in the US, but a new cross-sectional analysis finds that only a limited number of VC-backed startups are directly targeting the full spectrum of pregnancy care—and even fewer are designed for people who face the greatest barriers. The study cataloged 172 venture capital–backed maternal health companies active between 2014 and 2022, translating into $977.5 million in total funding over the period.

The researchers grouped startups by health category and discovered that the largest share of capital—$520.1 million—flowed into maternal and fetal health diagnostics. In other words, many companies are focusing on detecting risk and monitoring outcomes, rather than reengineering care delivery across the pregnancy journey.

Company purpose also shows a clear pattern. The most common type was “virtual or hybrid wraparound pregnancy care,” suggesting that startups are building digitally mediated services—often combining remote check-ins with coordinated clinical support. Yet the study’s equity findings raise a caution flag. Few startups explicitly mentioned health equity or maternal mortality as core goals, and only a small fraction reported accepting Medicaid. That matters because Medicaid coverage is central for low-income patients in the United States, and without it, innovations may fail to reach the populations with the highest maternal health risks.

Taken together, the results suggest VC-backed innovation is indeed filling gaps in pregnancy care delivery, but it is not consistently addressing the structural disparities that drive worse outcomes. The authors argue that the sector’s influence could accelerate needed change—if more startups were designed with low-income access and equity as primary objectives.

The study is published in JAMA Health Forum and details how capital allocation, product focus, and coverage decisions shape the startup landscape. As maternal health remains a national priority, these findings offer a data-driven snapshot of where venture funding is going—and where it is still missing.
