ROCKVILLE, Md. — Daniel E. Sabath, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Washington, has been named the 2026 Meritorious Service Award recipient by the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP). The honor is among the organization’s highest recognitions and highlights long-term, behind-the-scenes contributions that strengthen molecular diagnostics for patients.

AMP represents professionals who develop and perform molecular tests used to guide diagnosis, treatment selection, and disease monitoring. In AMP’s view, the award acknowledges sustained dedication and effort over time, including service that improves how the field operates and how its members support one another.

Sabath, a professor in the UW Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, focuses on coagulation disorders, hematologic conditions, and cancer. His clinical and academic training includes board certification in pathology and hematology, and he leads laboratory services across UW Medicine’s Montlake campus and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Across nearly three decades at UW, Sabath has trained generations of graduate students, medical trainees, residents, and fellows. His teaching emphasizes the practical interpretation of molecular and hematologic data, linking laboratory findings to clinical decision-making in coagulation and oncology settings.

His involvement with AMP began as volunteer service in 2004, later expanding to committee work and leadership roles. After serving as AMP president in 2022, he returned to active service, continuing to contribute wherever AMP needs expertise.

Sabath has also served on the editorial board of The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics since 2017, supporting the journal’s mission to advance education and scientific exchange in molecular pathology. This role supports the peer-review ecosystem that underpins evidence-based adoption of testing approaches.

In his statement, Sabath described AMP as both a professional home and a community that generates durable relationships. He emphasized the organization’s influence, particularly on how molecular pathology practices evolve to benefit patients.

AMP’s chief executive officer, Laurie Menser, CAE, credited Sabath’s distinguishing trait as willingness to lead and mentor consistently, even after formal leadership terms end. She noted that his scientific expertise and collaborative style have had lasting effects on AMP and the broader molecular pathology community.

Sabath will receive the award at the AMP 2026 Annual Meeting & Expo in November in Seattle. The Meritorious Service Award is granted only when AMP determines an individual’s sustained service has made a significant impact.
