The University of Texas at Arlington’s Smart Hospital has achieved a prestigious accreditation in teaching and education from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the foremost international authority on healthcare simulation standards. This recognition underscores UT Arlington’s pioneering role in equipping future healthcare professionals with cutting-edge, simulation-driven training.

Opened in January 2023, the 33,000-square-foot Smart Hospital integrates high-fidelity mannequins, live actor simulations, virtual reality environments, and other sophisticated technologies to create immersive clinical scenarios. These scenarios replicate real-world medical conditions and workflows, enabling learners to develop critical decision-making and hands-on skills in a controlled, risk-free setting.

According to Jennifer Roye, assistant dean for simulation and technology and clinical associate professor at UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the accreditation validates the Smart Hospital’s commitment to transforming simulation from a mere pedagogical tool into a comprehensive experiential platform. This approach aims to ensure that students graduate not only knowledgeable but also fully competent and confident in delivering safe, high-quality patient care from their very first day in the workforce.

The Smart Hospital plays a crucial role in addressing the healthcare workforce shortage, particularly in nursing. UTA graduates the largest number of baccalaureate-educated nurses in Texas, and the facility provided over 22,000 learner hours in fall 2025 alone, reflecting its growing educational reach and impact. The sophistication of the simulations, including virtual immersion rooms for clinical training—a pioneering effort at the national level—adequately prepares students for complex patient care environments.

The simulation program aligns tightly with UTA’s broader academic objectives and strategic priorities. Reviewers from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare praised this integration, noting that the Smart Hospital functions as a strategic asset rather than a standalone entity. This alignment ensures the simulation-based education directly supports workforce development, enhances educational outcomes, and positively impacts the community.

Moreover, the Smart Hospital holds multiple notable endorsements and distinctions, such as three concurrent National League for Nursing Centers of Excellence designations, International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning endorsement, and being among only 73 internationally recognized Smart Hospitals.

This accreditation, effective through December 31, 2031, sets a benchmark in healthcare education by leveraging realistic, technology-driven learning environments that replicate the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of healthcare delivery. UT Arlington’s innovative approach exemplifies how academic institutions can meet the evolving demands of clinical training in an increasingly complex medical landscape.
