A review of one transdisciplinary research project finds that political polarization can turn commitments to transparency, collaboration and public impact into vulnerabilities that are weaponized against researchers. Drawing on Co-Designing for Trust, a transdisciplinary project concerned with information resilience, the authors argue that inclusive research needs protection at the institutional and network level rather than relying on individual researchers to withstand political pressure. Transdisciplinary research, or TDR, is intended to address complex societal challenges by integrating expertise across disciplines and sectors.

Its distinctive commitments include collaborating across differences, engaging with lived experience and generating social impact. The case study examined how institutional transparency and participatory design were reframed through partisan narratives. The analysis indicates that these practices can create points of contention and vulnerability when the research becomes caught up in a politicized environment.

The authors call for a resilience-oriented reframing of TDR that anticipates system surprises and redistributes risk from individual researchers to institutions and support networks. They outline potential forms of protective infrastructure, ranging from project-specific escalation protocols to field-level advisory networks. These are proposed strategies, not safeguards evaluated in the case study, and the review does not establish how effective they would be in protecting future projects or partners.

The analysis also proposes a broader conception of scholarly success that includes relational durability, ethical labor and partner safety as core achievements rather than treating them as secondary to conventional outputs. In this framework, resilience depends on systems grounded in care, equity and accountability. The central conclusion is that resilient transdisciplinary research requires more than resilient individuals: institutions and networks must assume part of the burden of managing politically contested work.

Because the paper is a review centered on a single project case, its safeguards and expanded measures of success remain proposals requiring further evaluation rather than demonstrated interventions.
