Researchers have launched GenRefBR (Genetic References from Brazil), a web-based platform designed to centralize genomic information about Brazilian vertebrates. The team describes it as the first platform specifically built to organize and facilitate access to this data from a national perspective, and it is publicly available at genrefbr.itv.org, with source code and supporting resources hosted on GitHub.
The motivation behind the project lies in a persistent gap in how genetic data are stored internationally. Large volumes of genomic data are continuously deposited in public repositories, yet retrieving and analyzing this information from a geographic or national perspective remains difficult. Most international databases do not require occurrence metadata, such as country or locality, during submission, which makes it hard to isolate the genetic records relevant to a particular nation’s biodiversity.
GenRefBR addresses this limitation by compiling a wide array of genetic information about Brazilian vertebrates, including mitochondrial markers, organellar genomes, and nuclear genome assemblies. The platform organizes these data alongside vital metadata so that users can find not only the sequences themselves but also the contextual information needed to interpret them.
Functionally, the platform enables users to search, filter, and download data, and it provides direct links to the original database entries. This design means that researchers can trace any record back to its source rather than relying solely on the aggregated copy, an approach intended to keep the platform connected to the underlying repositories.
According to the team, which published the work in BioData Mining on 9 October 2026, the platform is aimed at researchers, conservationists, and environmental authorities. By bridging the data gap it identifies, GenRefBR is intended to support biodiversity research, environmental monitoring, and informed decision-making for conservation planning in Brazil.
The article was published as open access under the journal’s early-share policy, which provides faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research that is citable and carries a permanent DOI. The published version notes that this early version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record.
