NCSA has named Chuck Pavloski, Ph.D., its new Associate Director of Engagement. The role was recently vacated by John Towns, who was promoted to Deputy Director of the Center.

Coming to NCSA from the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at Penn State University, where he was the Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers director, Pavloski has a wealth of experience that will help augment the already impressive support that NCSA has to offer. He holds a Ph.D. in meteorology from Penn State and has 23 years of experience in promoting the use and development of advanced HPC and HTC techniques. He’s held multiple roles at ICDS, formerly the Institute for Cyber Science, including ICS-Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Interim Chief Architect, Advanced Technical Services Team Lead and Research and Development Software Engineer for Earth Sciences.

“I am very happy to see Chuck joining the NCSA team,” said Towns. “His considerable work at Penn State, along with his demonstrated ability to connect with the broader community, will serve him and NCSA well in this role.  Chuck brings energy, focus and a new perspective to NCSA’s leadership team, and I look forward to working closely with him.”

NCSA has been at the forefront of advanced and experimental computation for decades.  I’m really looking forward to working with the NCSA team and making a significant contribution to moving NCSA forward into the future. It is an absolute privilege to be given this opportunity to be part of this internationally recognized program.

–Chuck Pavloski, associate director of engagement, NCSA

Pavloski has extensive operational scientific field experience and is the former computing director for Penn State meteorology, where he architected seven HPC clusters spanning a variety of computationally intense scientific problems. His familiarity with HPC systems and resources makes him an ideal spokesperson for NCSA during outreach and engagement efforts.

In his new role at NCSA, Pavloski will provide strategic direction and leadership in building programs within the Center’s Engagement Directorate. He will work to advance the Center’s mission of leading and supporting partnerships around the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, the country and the world. He’ll also direct the NCSA’s efforts to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders on Illinois’ campus in Urbana, including the University and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (OVCRI) leadership, NCSA’s External Advisory Board and the University governance committees and partners.
