North Carolina State University has been selected to lead a 10-year initiative designed to rebuild and modernize the United States’ textile manufacturing capacity for the defense industry, with the long-term goal of strengthening a domestic supply chain that can produce advanced materials, protective systems and other critical textile technologies. Known as FutureTEX, the initiative is supported by the Department of War and will receive $36 million during its first year, with total funding potentially reaching $480 million over the decade. Its organizers describe the program as an effort to connect scientific research, industrial production, workforce training and national security within a single manufacturing ecosystem.
The project comes at a moment when textiles are increasingly viewed as high-technology materials rather than conventional fabrics. Modern defense textiles can incorporate sensors, conductive fibers, chemical barriers, advanced coatings, lightweight composites and engineered structures that respond to heat, pressure or mechanical stress. Producing these materials at scale requires far more than laboratory discovery. It demands digital manufacturing systems, specialized equipment, workers trained in emerging technologies and a network of domestic suppliers capable of moving quickly from prototype to production. FutureTEX is intended to address those interconnected challenges while improving the competitiveness of American textile companies serving both military and civilian markets.
North Carolina State University will coordinate the initiative through its Wilson College of Textiles, the only college in North America dedicated exclusively to textiles, according to the university. The institution’s role reflects North Carolina’s long association with textile production as well as its growing concentration of research in polymer science, fiber engineering, textile chemistry, wearable technology and advanced manufacturing. FutureTEX will bring together NC State, Drexel University, Gaston College, Georgia Tech, ISAIC and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, along with government agencies, nonprofit organizations and companies involved in the textile supply chain.
At the center of the effort is a push to connect digital infrastructure with physical manufacturing. Digital tools can allow textile producers to monitor machinery in real time, identify defects earlier, optimize energy and material use, and adjust production without relying entirely on manual intervention. Data-driven systems can also create a digital record of how a material was made, making it easier to reproduce performance specifications and verify quality for demanding defense applications. By combining these tools with advanced fibers, automated processes and new approaches to materials design, FutureTEX aims to make American factories more adaptable and less dependent on fragile or overseas supply networks.
The initiative’s first major objective is the creation of a nonprofit organization that will eventually assume administrative oversight of FutureTEX. NC State plans to establish the organization in partnership with Gaston College, which will house the new institute at its Kimbrell Campus in Belmont, North Carolina. Additional hubs are planned for Raleigh, Philadelphia, Lowell and Atlanta, creating a distributed network that links academic researchers, technical educators and manufacturing communities. The structure is intended to allow NC State and its university partners to concentrate on research, education and commercialization while the nonprofit manages the broader national collaboration.
The choice of Gaston County as the institute’s base also carries historical significance. The region has been connected to textile manufacturing since the late nineteenth century, when mills helped shape the economy and communities of the American Southeast. Much of the traditional industry has since contracted or moved abroad, leaving behind specialized knowledge, industrial infrastructure and a workforce with long experience in textile production. FutureTEX seeks to build on that foundation rather than simply restore older manufacturing models. Its objective is to introduce production methods capable of making materials with greater functionality, precision and economic value.
Commercialization will be a central part of the program. Research institutions frequently develop promising materials or production methods that remain confined to laboratories because companies lack the equipment, technical personnel or capital needed to test them at industrial scale. FutureTEX is designed to close that gap by supporting applied research and helping manufacturers evaluate technologies under realistic production conditions. A new fiber, coating or textile architecture may perform well in a controlled experiment but require extensive modification before it can survive continuous manufacturing. Pilot-scale facilities, shared equipment and collaboration between scientists and factory engineers can accelerate that transition.
The program is also being designed as a workforce initiative. Advanced textile manufacturing requires employees who understand both traditional production processes and fields such as robotics, data analysis, computer-controlled machinery, materials characterization and quality assurance. Community colleges and technical institutions will therefore play an important role in preparing workers for jobs that may not have existed in conventional textile mills. Gaston College’s participation reflects an emphasis on short-term training, technical credentials and education closely aligned with regional industry needs. Organizers say the project will support workforce development alongside modernization of facilities and equipment.
FutureTEX has already attracted more than 100 letters of support from industry organizations and is continuing to recruit companies to participate. Industry involvement will be essential because manufacturers can identify practical production barriers that are difficult to see from academic laboratories alone. Companies can also provide test environments, specialized knowledge and pathways for new technologies to reach customers. In return, participation may give manufacturers access to research expertise, emerging equipment and a larger network of potential partners. The initiative’s organizers say this type of collaboration is necessary to create a defense textile ecosystem that does not currently exist in the United States.
David Hinks, chief strategic partnerships officer of FutureTEX and dean of NC State’s Wilson College of Textiles, said the initiative will focus on commercializing applied research for both warfighters and the domestic textile industry. NC State Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Krista Walton emphasized the university’s experience with technology transfer and industry collaboration, including participation in more Manufacturing USA institutes than almost any other university in the country. University Chancellor Kevin Howell said NC State’s military and textile connections make it well positioned to lead the national effort, while Gaston College President John Hauser described the project as a natural extension of the region’s manufacturing history and workforce mission.
If FutureTEX meets its ambitions, the initiative could influence how the United States approaches a category of manufacturing that is often overlooked despite its strategic importance. Textiles are embedded in uniforms, body armor, tents, filtration systems, medical supplies, vehicle components and protective equipment, while emerging textile technologies can make materials lighter, stronger, more functional and more responsive to their surroundings. The challenge is to transform promising discoveries into dependable products made through resilient domestic supply chains. By linking universities, manufacturers, government and nonprofit partners over a 10-year period, FutureTEX aims to make that transformation a permanent feature of American manufacturing and defense preparedness.
