Can lasting love be estimated like a system of equations? Over the past thirty years, researchers have argued that romantic relationships evolve along recognizable trajectories—and that mathematics can help flag when stability is slipping. Rather than mysticism, the approach treats feelings as dynamical variables shaped by interaction, time delays, and recurring shocks.

Professor Laurent Pujo-Menjouet of the University of Lyon I, working with an international team, develops models that represent couples’ emotional dynamics as a mathematical system. In his book Love! Valour! Equations!, he frames the key idea bluntly: there is no magical potion, but there is something actionable in understanding how trajectories unfold.

The modeling strategy borrows from population biology. The classic Malthus framework and Lotka–Volterra predator–prey equations describe how systems change under competition and pressure. A related concept, the Allee effect, introduces a critical threshold: below a certain level, a population tends toward collapse; above it, recovery and growth become likely.

In relationship terms, the “population” is the couple’s effective bond. The models aim not to predict who people fall for, but to estimate why some pairs remain stable through stress while others drift toward separation. Pujo-Menjouet emphasizes that the goal is to detect patterns in how emotional states evolve rather than to claim deterministic outcomes.

Psychologist John Gottman has already shown that interaction data can be mapped to relationship outcomes. Newer approaches refine the mathematics by adding delayed responses—reflecting how the time it takes to process conflicts can either dampen or amplify tension.

A central mechanism in Pujo-Menjouet’s framework is a critical level of relationship strength. When feelings drop below that boundary and remain there, the mathematics forecasts a decline toward instability. Importantly, identifying the threshold can guide “danger zone” interventions before trajectories become harder to reverse.

The team’s extensions incorporate typical disruptions such as arguments, stress, and external pressures, as well as recovery dynamics. They propose three ingredients for long-term stability: mutual attraction, the natural erosion of affect over time, and each partner’s reaction to the other’s emotional signals.

Looking ahead, combining traditional modeling with artificial intelligence could enable an early-warning “relationship GPS.” Such tools would not dictate who to love; they would suggest where a couple is heading and what course corrections might protect shared stability.

Caveats remain significant. Many models are grounded primarily in Western relationship patterns, and human behavior is not perfectly rational. The equations predict tendencies, not certainties, and commitment, therapy, and personal growth can push couples off the predicted path.
