How Executive Functions Shape Children’s Reading, a Systematic Review Finds

A child’s ability to pause before acting, switch between ideas and keep information in mind may be closely tied to how successfully they learn to read, according to the most detailed synthesis yet of research on the connection. A systematic review and meta-analysis of elementary-school children found a statistically significant, moderate association between executive functions and reading performance, with working-memory updating showing the strongest descriptive relationship. The findings suggest that reading is not only a matter of decoding letters and words. It also depends on a set of mental control systems that help children maintain attention, suppress distractions, shift strategies and continuously revise the meaning they are constructing from text.

The study, published in Educational Psychology Review, brought together evidence from 69 studies involving 16,555 typically developing children between the ages of 5 and 13. The research teams searched six major databases—PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and ProQuest—and included studies conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and Israel. Sixty of the studies provided enough information for a quantitative meta-analysis, producing 275 individual effect sizes. Most of the studies were cross-sectional, meaning they measured executive function and reading at roughly the same time. As a result, the findings reveal a relationship rather than proving that stronger executive function causes better reading.

The researchers organized executive function using a widely used “unity and diversity” framework. Inhibition is the ability to withhold an automatic or dominant response, such as resisting the urge to answer before fully processing a question. Shifting, also called cognitive flexibility, is the capacity to move between tasks, rules or interpretations. Updating is a working-memory process in which incoming information is held, manipulated and used to replace information that is no longer relevant. In real life these abilities overlap: a child reading a sentence must hold earlier words in mind, ignore misleading interpretations and adjust their understanding when the sentence takes an unexpected turn. Laboratory tasks intended to measure one ability therefore often engage several executive processes at once.

Reading was treated as a system of connected but distinct skills rather than a single ability. Word reading involves accurately recognizing and pronouncing letters, words and unfamiliar letter combinations. Listening comprehension involves understanding spoken language, a foundation that can support later understanding of written text. Reading fluency combines accuracy, speed and expression when reading connected passages, freeing mental resources for meaning. Reading comprehension is the construction of meaning from words, sentences and broader discourse, including the ability to make inferences that are not explicitly stated. This approach follows the Direct and Indirect Effects Model of Reading, which proposes that executive functions support both basic reading components and the higher-order integration required for comprehension.

Across all executive-function and reading measures, the average association was r = .33, with a 95 percent confidence interval from .29 to .37 and a probability value below .001. In practical terms, children who performed better on executive-function tasks tended, on average, to perform better on reading tasks as well. The researchers also found substantial variation between studies: the I² statistic was 82.1 percent, indicating that much of the variability could not be explained by sampling error alone. Differences in the children tested, the tasks administered and the ways reading was scored may therefore be just as important as the broad relationship itself. Updating had the largest descriptive association overall, followed by inhibition and shifting, although the study did not model the three abilities together as direct statistical competitors.

Updating’s prominent role is consistent with the demands of reading. A child must retain the sounds and meanings of recently read words while integrating them into a sentence, paragraph or larger argument. Verbal updating tasks—such as listening span or reading span tests—were generally more strongly associated with word reading, listening comprehension and reading comprehension than visuospatial tasks. The alignment makes cognitive sense: verbal working memory requires the child to manipulate language, while reading also depends heavily on maintaining phonological representations and linking them with meaning. Updating was positively associated with reading fluency as well, although only three studies examined that relationship, so the estimate remains tentative. The pattern does not mean that working memory alone determines reading success; vocabulary, instruction, phonological skills, attention, prior knowledge and many other factors also contribute.

Inhibition and shifting showed meaningful but less uniform links. Inhibition was moderately associated with word reading and reading comprehension, particularly when tasks required children to control responses or suppress competing information. A Stroop task, for example, can require a child to name the ink color of a word while ignoring the word’s conflicting meaning. Such verbal interference may overlap with the demands of reading more closely than a Simon task, which typically involves resolving spatial conflict with little language. Shifting was also related to reading, especially when children completed reading-specific or conceptually demanding sorting tasks. The ability to move between sound-based, semantic and visual representations could help readers adapt when a word or sentence requires a new interpretation. Yet even identical executive and reading measures sometimes produced different results across studies, underscoring the difficulty of treating these abilities as simple, isolated traits.

The way researchers tested reading changed the apparent strength of the associations. Timed assessments, such as tests of rapid word reading, emphasize efficiency and processing speed, whereas untimed measures place greater weight on accuracy. Reading-comprehension tests also differ: cloze tasks may ask children to supply a missing word from a sentence, while open-ended or multiple-choice tests can require literal recall, inference or evaluation. Stronger links between shifting and reading were observed when executive-function performance was scored for efficiency rather than accuracy, and shifting showed a particularly notable difference for reading comprehension. However, higher-quality studies produced weaker shifting–reading associations than fair-quality studies, a pattern that may indicate that some larger effects were inflated by methodological limitations. No comparable quality differences were found for inhibition or updating.

The review found no statistically significant evidence that the overall executive-function–reading relationship differed between younger elementary pupils, roughly ages 5 to 8, and older pupils, roughly ages 9 to 13. That result should not be interpreted as proof that development does not matter. The studies often covered narrow age ranges, and many did not report results separately by grade. The researchers also divided age into two broad groups, which may have obscured gradual changes as children move from learning to decode toward reading to learn. Evidence was especially sparse for inhibition and shifting in relation to listening comprehension and reading fluency, while updating was studied far more often. The apparent stability across age may therefore reflect limited statistical power and uneven coverage rather than an unchanging cognitive relationship.

The findings carry an important warning for schools and researchers tempted by simple claims about “brain training” or reading interventions. The results do not show that exercising executive functions will automatically improve literacy, and they do not identify a single cognitive test that can diagnose a reading problem. Instead, they suggest that assessment should be more precise about which executive process and which reading skill are being measured. Future studies will need larger, longitudinal samples, balanced coverage of all executive-function and reading combinations, and models that can separate shared executive ability from component-specific contributions. Researchers should also examine children with dyslexia, attention difficulties and other learning differences, who were excluded from this review. The central message is both promising and cautious: successful reading appears to recruit a coordinated control system, but understanding—and improving—that system will require experiments capable of testing causation rather than correlation.
