Palmira, Colombia—A new study in Agricultural Systems reframes how climate-smart farming innovations spread, pointing to social relationships as a practical engine for responsible scaling. As droughts, floods, and heat waves intensify, agrifood systems need not only technologies that work, but pathways that help farmers understand, adapt, and share them.
Researchers analyzed survey and behavioral data from 514 smallholder farmers participating in Climate-Smart Villages (TeSAC) in Guatemala and Honduras. Rather than treating adoption as the first measurable success, the work focuses on an earlier moment: when farmers begin discussing practices, comparing results, asking questions, and learning from neighbors.
The core technical idea is straightforward but often overlooked—innovation diffusion is not guaranteed by performance alone. The study argues that knowledge circulation depends on social capital, operationalized through dimensions such as trust among farmers, closeness of relationships, and mutual support. These factors shape whether practical information travels, survives misunderstanding, and becomes locally relevant.
Using the structure of social networks, the researchers show that knowledge sharing behaves like an observable indicator of early-stage scaling. That means the “spread” of an innovation can be detected before it appears as widespread adoption, providing a more sensitive signal for program designers.
Trust among farmers emerges as a key lever. When trust is higher, farmers are more likely to share experiences and explain what they tried, how it performed, and what trade-offs they encountered. In turn, close relationships strengthen learning networks, increasing the chances that insights move across households and communities.
Mutual support becomes especially important in contexts where trust is relatively low. Guidance, collaboration, and shared problem-solving help keep knowledge flows active even when interpersonal confidence is limited. Interestingly, trust in organizations showed less influence than trust built directly within communities.
Importantly, the study finds a positive association between climate-smart practice adoption and knowledge sharing, suggesting a feedback loop: learning encourages trial, and trial generates new lessons for others. The researchers propose that scaling should therefore be designed to support these interaction pathways.
For governments, development agencies, and innovation programs, the findings argue for embedding social dynamics into scaling strategies. Responsible scaling becomes less about pushing information outward and more about enabling farmers to collectively interpret evidence, adapt methods to local soils and climates, and anticipate unintended effects as innovations expand.
