For the first time in its illustrious history, the 44th edition of Eurocrypt will be hosted in Madrid, marking a significant milestone for the city and the broader European cryptographic community. Eurocrypt is renowned as one of the foremost international conferences in cryptography, a discipline that underpins digital security worldwide. Organized by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR), this event is scheduled from May 4 to May 8, 2025, at the iconic Riu Plaza España Hotel. Preceding the main conference, intensive workshops and preparatory sessions will take place at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid on May 3 and 4, setting the stage for a week of groundbreaking presentations, discussions, and collaborations.

Eurocrypt stands alongside Crypto, held in the United States, as one of the most prestigious scientific gatherings in cryptographic research. This event serves as a global platform where theoreticians and practitioners converge to present advances that drive the security and efficiency of cryptographic protocols. This year’s conference is particularly competitive, featuring a rigorous review process that whittled down 624 submitted academic papers to a select 123. These submissions cover a diverse array of topics, from foundational advances in cryptographic theory to novel applications addressing contemporary challenges such as quantum resistance and privacy preservation.

Madrid’s hosting of Eurocrypt 2025 is notably historic, representing only the third time Spain has welcomed this elite conference, following the editions held in Zaragoza in 1996 and Barcelona in 2007. This return to Spain reflects the nation’s growing prominence in the global cryptographic research landscape and underscores its increasing contributions to cutting-edge cryptographic science. The conference is expected to draw over 650 attendees from around the world, including researchers, industry experts, and government representatives dedicated to advancing the state of cryptographic knowledge.

The pre-conference workshops scheduled for May 3 and 4 will dive deep into several critical areas shaping the future of cryptography. Topics include post-quantum cryptography, which investigates cryptographic systems resilient to the future threat posed by quantum computers, an area of paramount importance as quantum technology matures. Other workshops will address blockchain technologies, scrutinizing the cryptographic protocols that enable decentralized, tamper-proof ledgers. The validation of cryptographic tools, artificial intelligence applications in cryptography, and enhanced privacy-preserving mechanisms also occupy prominent positions in the preparatory sessions, reflecting the multi-disciplinary and evolving nature of the field.

Central to the organization of Eurocrypt 2025 is the Madrid-based IMDEA Software Institute, a leading research center specializing in software science and technology. IMDEA Software has collaborated closely with Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and local tech enterprise Inversed Tech to form a robust organizing committee. The conference leadership features Dario Fiore, Associate Research Professor at IMDEA Software, serving as General Chair, alongside Ignacio Cascudo, Associate Research Professor, and María Isabel González Vasco, Full Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, who act as Co-Chairs. Their combined expertise ensures a thoughtfully curated program that balances deep theoretical insights with practical breakthroughs.

Sponsorship for Eurocrypt 2025 showcases a blend of academic and corporate investment in cryptographic research. IMDEA Software is proud to be a Gold sponsor alongside global technology giants such as Apple, Google, and Huawei, demonstrating the strategic intersection of research and industry interests in securing the digital landscape. Additional sponsors include firms like Zama and Midnight at the Platinum level; GMV, CMAD, AWS, and TII within the Silver category; and HEAAN, NEC, NTT Research, PQShield, IBM, Ericsson, and Orange at the Bronze level. This multi-tiered sponsorship structure reflects the broad ecosystem engaged in advancing cryptographic science.

During the conference, IMDEA Software’s presence will be further highlighted through a specialized technical talk on May 6. PhD candidate Emanuele Giunta, along with researchers Dario Catalano and Francesco Migliaro, will present “Generic Anamorphic Encryption, Revisited: New Limitations and Constructions.” This talk promises to contribute novel theoretical perspectives to the field of encryption, examining the depths of anamorphic techniques and articulating new constraints as well as possible extensions for practical implementation. Such contributions are vital to pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in secure communications.

The technological and theoretical work showcased at Eurocrypt has far-reaching implications. Cryptography underpins the security of online communications, financial transactions, data privacy, and even national security infrastructures. Innovations unveiled at this conference often inform the standards and protocols adopted globally, influencing everything from secure web protocols to encrypted messaging applications. The rigorous selection process, covering a broad range of topics such as lattice-based cryptography, homomorphic encryption, zero-knowledge proofs, and secure multi-party computation, guarantees that the solutions introduced meet the highest standards of scientific excellence and practical relevance.

Madrid’s role as host city not only emphasizes its growing stature in technological research but also opens a vibrant cultural dimension to the event. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the city’s rich historical backdrop, bridging European heritage with a forward-looking scientific agenda. This synergy between place and purpose adds a unique vibrancy to the conference atmosphere, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and interdisciplinary exchange.

Eurocrypt’s decision to feature extensive pre-conference workshops highlights the evolving complexity of cryptographic challenges and the need for focused engagement on specialized areas. These sessions foster deep dives into emergent threats such as quantum adversaries and privacy invasions facilitated by artificial intelligence. By dedicating time and resources to these workshops, the conference supports the cultivation of expertise that anticipates future developments and equips researchers and practitioners with advanced tools to tackle them.

The collaboration between various Madrid-based academic institutions and cutting-edge technology companies exemplifies a model for future research ecosystems. The integration of local expertise, strong institutional leadership, and industry sponsorship ensures sustainable growth and ongoing innovation in cryptographic sciences. This approach serves as a blueprint for other regions aspiring to become hubs of excellence in computational security and software technology research.

IMDEA Software Institute’s sponsorship and organizational involvement underscore its strategic mission to drive software science and technology forward. The institute’s emphasis on developing secure, reliable, and efficient software underpins many of the cryptographic innovations discussed at Eurocrypt. This alignment of goals promotes the creation of practical cryptographic tools grounded in rigorous theoretical foundations, ensuring that advances translate into real-world security enhancements.

In conclusion, Eurocrypt 2025 in Madrid promises to be a landmark event, uniting the global cryptographic community in a comprehensive exploration of current challenges and future opportunities. Through its carefully curated program, diverse sponsorship, and dynamic organizational leadership, the conference will facilitate transformative advances in cryptographic theory and application. As digital security becomes ever more critical to everyday life, the breakthroughs generated here will shape the technological landscape for years to come.
