The scientific community devoted to understanding why and how our cells stop dividing is preparing for one of its most important gatherings of the year. The 11th International Cell Senescence Association Conference will take place from November 3 to 5, 2026, at Seoul National University’s Siheung Convention Center in South Korea, and the journal Aging has announced its official support for the event. The conference is expected to draw researchers from around the world who share a common goal: advancing understanding of cellular senescence and its far-reaching roles in aging, cancer, health, and disease.

Cellular senescence is one of the most consequential biological phenomena in modern biomedical science. It describes a state in which cells cease to divide yet remain metabolically active, often secreting a complex mixture of inflammatory signals, growth factors, and enzymes known collectively as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype. While this process plays a protective role in suppressing tumor formation and contributes to wound healing and embryonic development, the accumulation of senescent cells over a lifetime is increasingly implicated in tissue dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and a wide spectrum of age-related conditions. It is precisely this dual character, beneficial in the short term and potentially harmful in the long term, that makes senescence research one of the fastest-moving frontiers in geroscience.

The International Cell Senescence Association, known as ICSA, describes itself as an open, global community dedicated to fostering collaboration and scientific progress across the field of cellular senescence. Its biennial conferences have become a fixture in the calendars of laboratories spanning molecular biology, oncology, immunology, and aging research. By convening scientists from many disciplines and continents, the association aims to accelerate the translation of fundamental discoveries about senescent cells into therapeutic strategies that could extend healthspan, the portion of life spent in good health, and delay the onset of chronic disease.

Among the key speakers announced for the 2026 meeting is Marco Demaria, Professor of Cellular Ageing and Senescence at the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. Demaria holds a particularly prominent position in the field, serving simultaneously as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Aging and as President of ICSA. His dual leadership roles reflect the increasingly interconnected nature of senescence research, where scientific societies, academic institutions, and scientific publishers work in concert to disseminate findings and set research agendas. His laboratory is widely recognized for work on the molecular mechanisms that govern senescent cell behavior and their interactions with the immune system.

The choice of South Korea as the host country underscores the global reach of senescence science. Research institutions across Asia have made substantial investments in aging biology in recent years, driven in part by rapidly aging populations in the region. Seoul National University, one of the most prestigious universities in Asia, provides a fitting venue for a conference whose agenda spans the full arc of the field, from the basic mechanisms that trigger senescence to the emerging pharmacological approaches designed to eliminate or modulate senescent cells in living organisms.

As part of its support for the conference, Aging will sponsor a $200 cash poster prize recognizing outstanding scientific research presented at the meeting. Poster sessions occupy a distinctive place in scientific conferences, particularly for early-career researchers who use them to present work-in-progress, receive feedback from senior investigators, and build the professional networks that shape future careers. By rewarding exceptional poster presentations, the journal signals its commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists who will carry the senescence field forward.

The journal Aging, published by Impact Journals, has built its mission around advancing understanding of the biological mechanisms that drive aging and the development of age-related diseases. According to the journal’s stated mission, it serves as a platform for high-quality research that uncovers the cellular, molecular, and systemic processes underlying aging and translates these insights into strategies to extend healthspan and delay the onset of chronic disease. Its sponsorship of the ICSA conference aligns with that mission, positioning the publication at the center of the conversations that will determine where the field moves next.

The scientific stakes of these conversations are considerable. Over the past decade, a class of experimental drugs known as senolytics has attracted intense attention for its ability to selectively eliminate senescent cells in animal models, in some cases improving physical function and extending healthy lifespan. At the same time, researchers have developed senomorphic approaches that aim not to kill senescent cells but to suppress their inflammatory secretions. Clinical trials exploring both strategies are underway for a range of age-related conditions, and conferences such as the ICSA meeting serve as critical venues where results are debated, methodologies are standardized, and the field confronts unresolved questions about how to measure senescence reliably in human tissues.

Equally important are the questions that connect senescence to cancer biology. Senescence acts as a powerful tumor-suppressive mechanism, halting the proliferation of cells at risk of malignant transformation, yet senescent cells that persist in tissues can create an inflammatory microenvironment that may support tumor progression in neighboring cells. This paradox sits at the heart of much contemporary research and will likely feature prominently in the presentations and discussions in Seoul. Understanding when senescence protects and when it harms remains one of the central challenges for researchers seeking to harness the process therapeutically.

As November approaches, anticipation is building within a research community that has grown dramatically in size and influence since the International Cell Senescence Association held its first meetings. What began as a specialized topic within cell biology has matured into a discipline with its own society, its own dedicated journals, its own pharmacological pipeline, and a growing presence in public discussions about healthy longevity. The 11th ICSA Conference in Seoul will offer a snapshot of that maturation, bringing together the world’s leading voices on cellular senescence at a moment when the field’s discoveries are moving closer than ever to clinical relevance, and when the promise of extending not just lifespan but healthspan feels increasingly within scientific reach.
