A structured cat-training program for children with developmental disabilities produced measurable benefits for both sides of the human–animal relationship, according to a new study from Oregon State University. The six-week intervention was associated with healthier child behaviors, greater responsibility for cat care, stronger attachment between children and their cats, and increased feline sociability. The findings challenge the widespread assumption that cats are merely passive companions in animal-assisted interventions, suggesting instead that they can actively participate in programs designed to support children’s social, emotional and behavioral development.

“People often underestimate what cats can contribute to human-animal interventions,” said Monique Udell, a professor at Oregon State University who studies human-animal interactions. “This study shows that cats can be active participants rather than passive companions. When children and their cats work together through training, it can strengthen their bond while supporting positive outcomes for both the child and the cat.” The research was co-led by Udell and Megan MacDonald, a professor of kinesiology at Oregon State.

Animal-assisted interventions have increasingly been studied as tools for promoting physical, psychological and social well-being. Most research and public attention has focused on dogs and horses, animals that are often selected for their trainability and visible responsiveness to human cues. Cats have received far less scientific attention, partly because their behavior is more variable and they are often viewed as independent or difficult to train. Yet cats are capable of forming attachment bonds with people, learning through positive reinforcement and adapting their behavior in response to human interaction.

The new study involved 36 children between the ages of 8 and 17 and their family cats. The participants included children with developmental disabilities, and the researchers examined whether training could influence not only children’s behavior toward their cats but also the cats’ responses to the children. Half of the participants joined the intervention group, completing six 45-minute sessions and weekly homework assignments. The remaining participants served as a control group and did not take part in the training activities during the study period.

The intervention focused on practical training mechanics and behaviors such as “sit” and “come.” Children were taught how to deliver cues, reinforce desired behavior and interact with their cats in a consistent and humane manner. Weekly homework encouraged them to practice these techniques at home, turning training into a repeated cooperative activity rather than a one-time exercise. This structure may have been important because learning theory predicts that behaviors become more reliable when they are reinforced consistently and practiced in familiar environments.

Researchers assessed the participants at three points: before the program began, six weeks after it ended and one year after the study started. The surveys measured the children’s attachment to their cats, their responsibility for cat-related chores and their humane treatment of the animals. The team also examined the cats’ attachment to the children and their sociability during standardized training sessions. These sessions were videotaped and later coded for specific behaviors, allowing the researchers to quantify how closely cats stayed to the child and how they responded during the interaction.

One measure of feline sociability was the amount of time a cat kept at least one paw inside a taped semicircle extending one meter around the child. Although this may appear simple, such behavioral measures help researchers distinguish general proximity from active tolerance or engagement. A cat remaining near a child during a structured interaction may indicate comfort, social interest or increased confidence, while avoidance can signal stress, uncertainty or a weak relationship. The study also classified cats according to attachment patterns, using behavioral observations to determine whether their relationship with the child appeared secure or insecure.

The results showed a significant increase in cat-care responsibility among children in the training group, while responsibility scores declined among children in the control group. Among trained participants, the proportion who reported teaching their cats new behaviors rose from 44% before the intervention to 94% afterward. The percentage who walked their cats increased from 28% to 78%, reflecting a broader cultural shift in which some owners now use harnesses and leashes to take cats outdoors for walks, camping trips and other activities.

The program also appeared to influence the cats’ relationships with their young owners. Six cats moved from an insecure to a secure attachment classification during the study. The children attended all six training sessions, and the average homework completion rate was 81%, suggesting that the activities were engaging enough to sustain participation. The researchers noted that consistent attendance and practice were signs that the intervention had a meaningful impact, while also emphasizing that the results should be interpreted in light of the study’s relatively small sample size.

Udell said the findings show what can happen when children receive appropriate guidance for building cooperative relationships with cats. The animals may become more confident and social, while children begin to view them as partners, sources of motivation and living beings whose needs require responsibility and empathy. The researchers believe cat-assisted training could eventually complement other interventions for children with physical, learning, social, emotional or behavioral challenges. Further studies with larger groups and longer follow-up periods will be needed to determine which children benefit most, how individual feline temperament affects outcomes and whether the improvements persist over time.
