BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology, an open access journal published within the BMC Series on the Springer Nature platform, has announced that it is recruiting new Editorial Board Members. The call comes at a moment when the journal reports rising visibility and a growing stream of submissions, a trend that has prompted its in-house editorial team to expand the pool of academic editors who evaluate manuscripts, select reviewers, and guide papers through peer review. For working pharmacologists and toxicologists, the announcement is a concrete invitation to step into the machinery of scientific publishing at a level where individual judgment directly shapes what enters the literature.

The journal’s stated scope is deliberately broad. It considers articles on all aspects of chemically defined therapeutic and toxic agents, spanning experimental and clinical pharmacology, clinical trials, and toxicology. In practical terms, that means a single editorial board may need to cover everything from receptor pharmacology and dose-response modeling to adverse drug reactions and chemical hazard assessment. The recruitment notice identifies five priority disciplines for new board members: basic pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, computational and in silico modeling studies, drug design, discovery and delivery, and toxicology. Candidates from any field within the journal’s remit are encouraged to apply, but expertise in one of these areas is described as particularly welcome.

What distinguishes this call from many editorial recruitment drives is the journal’s explicit editorial philosophy. BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology states that it does not make editorial decisions on the basis of a study’s perceived interest or likely impact. Instead, the criterion is scientific validity: for research articles, this includes a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and adherence to community-agreed standards relevant to the field. This approach reflects the broader ethos of the BMC Series, which brands itself as open, inclusive and trusted, and which has long argued that methodologically rigorous science deserves publication regardless of how headline-grabbing its results may be.

The criteria for candidates are specific and measurable. Applicants must have a minimum of fifteen research papers published in reputable, English-language, peer-reviewed journals. They should also be frequently listed as a corresponding author, typically as first or last author, during the last five years, a requirement intended to signal that candidates remain active researchers who lead their own studies rather than appearing only in the middle of long author lists. Beyond publication record, the journal seeks demonstrable expertise that fits both the scope of the journal and its current needs, along with a demonstrated commitment to open access, data sharing, and innovation in scientific publishing.

The role itself carries well-defined responsibilities. An Editorial Board Member is primarily responsible for assessing manuscripts for their suitability for peer review, selecting suitable reviewers who meet the journal’s requirements, and recommending decisions on the basis of the peer reviewers’ reports together with the editor’s own assessment, all while adhering to the journal’s editorial policies. This middle tier of academic editing is often described as the hinge of the peer-review system: it is where editors decide whether a submission is technically plausible enough to send out for review, which independent experts are best placed to scrutinize it, and how conflicting reviewer reports should be weighed when a recommendation is made.

The workload expectation is also spelled out. Editorial Board Members for BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology should be engaged and willing to handle a minimum of twelve manuscripts per year across a range of disciplines within their broader subject area. That figure, roughly one manuscript per month, is designed to be compatible with an active research career, but it is not trivial. Each handled manuscript involves an initial suitability assessment, reviewer identification and invitation, follow-up with reviewers who may be slow to respond, and a final synthesis of reviewer comments into a recommendation to the journal’s Editor, to whom board members formally report.

New appointees will not be left to learn the role by trial and error. The journal states that Editorial Board Members will receive training and that the in-house editorial team will provide administrative support throughout. This support structure matters in a field like pharmacology and toxicology, where manuscripts can raise questions about study design in animal models, statistical handling of dose-response data, ethical approval for human trials, and the responsible reporting of adverse events. Handling such submissions appropriately requires familiarity both with the science and with the journal’s policies on ethics, data availability, and reporting standards.

The emphasis on open access and data sharing in the candidate criteria reflects wider currents in scientific publishing. Open access journals make their articles freely readable at publication, removing paywalls between research and its potential users, including clinicians, regulators, and researchers in lower-income settings. Data sharing expectations go a step further, asking authors to make the underlying datasets available so that analyses can be checked and reused. Editorial Board Members who advocate for these practices are, in effect, front-line ambassadors for a publishing model in which transparency is treated as a condition of trust rather than an optional extra.

The recruitment drive also illustrates how peer review is organized at scale. As submission volumes grow, journals cannot rely on a small circle of editors; they need distributed boards of working scientists who can cover the full disciplinary spread of incoming papers. Expanding the editorial team, as the journal is now doing, is the standard mechanism for keeping review times reasonable while maintaining screening standards. For early- to mid-career researchers who meet the publication thresholds, board membership offers a window into how editorial decisions are actually made, experience that many scientists find valuable when they later submit, review, or lead their own journals.

Researchers who are interested and meet the stated criteria are invited to submit an application through the journal’s online form. The journal closes its announcement with a direct invitation, saying it looks forward to hearing from applicants. For a journal whose remit runs from basic mechanisms of drug action to the toxicological evaluation of chemical agents, the search for new board members is ultimately about capacity and coverage: ensuring that as more pharmacology and toxicology manuscripts arrive, each one still receives the careful, validity-focused assessment that the journal says defines its editorial standards.
