BMC Geriatrics, the open access journal published within the BMC series of the Springer Nature portfolio, has announced an open call for new Editorial Board Members. The recruitment drive comes at a moment of measurable growth for the journal, which considers research on every aspect of the health and healthcare of older people. According to the announcement, the expansion is a direct response to rising submission volumes: as more authors choose the journal for their work on aging, the editorial team must scale up to keep handling manuscripts quickly without diluting the editorial standards that reviewers and readers have come to expect. The journal is therefore seeking experienced researchers who can take hands-on responsibility for the peer review process, the mechanism through which scientific quality is assessed before publication.

The scope of the journal is unusually broad for a specialty title. BMC Geriatrics publishes articles on all aspects of the health and healthcare of older adults, explicitly including studies of how healthcare systems and healthcare policies affect this population. Beyond clinical and health services research, the journal also welcomes work on the aging process itself, encompassing cellular, genetic, and physiological mechanisms as well as cognitive changes associated with growing older. This dual identity, spanning both the biology of aging and the practical organization of care for older people, shapes the profile of the candidates the journal wants to recruit. The call specifically encourages applications from researchers working in six areas: biology and technology; health services research; neurology, stroke and cognition; physical functioning, physical health and activity; psychology, psychiatry and quality of life; and public health, nutrition and epidemiology.

What distinguishes the BMC series from many traditional subscription journals is its stated editorial philosophy. The publisher describes the series as open, inclusive and trusted, and BMC Geriatrics applies a policy that has become a hallmark of the portfolio: editorial decisions are not made on the basis of how interesting a study appears or how much impact it is likely to generate. Instead, the sole criterion for research articles is scientific validity. A manuscript must present a scientifically sound research question, use suitable methods and analysis, and follow the community-agreed standards relevant to its field. If those conditions are met, the study is considered publishable regardless of whether its findings are novel, positive, or headline-grabbing. This approach is designed to reduce publication bias and to give rigor, rather than novelty, the decisive role in what enters the scientific record.

That philosophy connects directly to the open access model under which the journal operates. All articles in BMC Geriatrics are made freely and permanently available online upon publication, removing paywalls between research on older people’s health and the clinicians, policymakers, patients, and researchers who might use it. The journal also signals a commitment to data sharing and to innovation in scientific publishing, and it explicitly asks that applicants share these commitments. In practice, this means the journal is looking not only for scientists with strong publication records but for advocates of a particular vision of scholarly communication, one in which articles, and ideally the underlying data, circulate openly and peer review is conducted transparently and professionally.

The formal criteria for candidates are specific. Applicants should have a minimum of fifteen research papers published in reputable, English-language, peer-reviewed journals. They should also have been frequently listed as a corresponding author, appearing as first or last author, during the last five years. These thresholds are intended to demonstrate two things at once: sustained productivity in the candidate’s own field and practical experience managing collaborative research projects, since corresponding authors typically handle communication with journals, coordinate co-authors, and oversee revisions. The journal frames its ideal Editorial Board Member as someone who supports the journal’s ethos, scope, editorial standards, and policies, and who will act as a committed advocate representing BMC Geriatrics within the wider scientific community.

The core responsibility of the role is the management of peer review. Editorial Board Members are accountable for the scientific quality of the manuscripts they handle, and they are expected to adhere to the journal’s ethos, editorial standards, policies, and scope while ensuring that each manuscript moves through peer review efficiently and appropriately. In day-to-day terms, this involves selecting and inviting suitable external reviewers, evaluating the reviews that come back, weighing disagreements between referees, and making or recommending a decision on whether a paper meets the journal’s validity threshold. Members are also expected to provide a professional and supportive service to authors, ensuring that the manuscripts for which they are responsible fulfill the journal’s requirements and are handled in a timely, courteous manner through every stage of review.

The workload attached to the position is deliberately modest. The journal asks that Editorial Board Members be engaged and willing to handle approximately two manuscripts per month within their field of expertise. That figure reflects a model in which board members act as working scientists first, contributing their domain knowledge to peer review without leaving their own laboratories or clinics. To make the role manageable, the journal provides training for new members, and the in-house editorial team supplies administrative support, handling much of the logistical work of correspondence and manuscript tracking so that board members can concentrate on scientific judgment. This combination of a defined, limited workload with institutional backing is presented as a way to attract active researchers who might otherwise decline editorial duties as a distraction from research.

The recruitment call also offers a window into how peer-reviewed publishing is evolving in the gerontology field. Research on aging has expanded rapidly as populations worldwide grow older, drawing in disciplines that once had little contact with geriatric medicine, from computational biologists studying cellular senescence to data scientists building predictive models of falls, frailty, and cognitive decline. By recruiting across biology and technology, neurology and cognition, physical functioning, psychological health, and public health, the journal is assembling an editorial team broad enough to referee this interdisciplinary influx. Each new board member is expected to handle papers within their own area of expertise, which means the composition of the board effectively determines which kinds of aging research the journal can evaluate competently and quickly.

For researchers who meet the criteria, the application route is straightforward: the journal has published an online form through which interested candidates can submit their details, and the announcement closes with an invitation to apply. The call is notable less for any single requirement than for what it reveals about the infrastructure of open science. Journals in the BMC series rely on working academics to carry out the quality control that underpins published research, and as submission volumes grow, that human infrastructure must grow with it. The expansion of the BMC Geriatrics editorial board is, at bottom, an investment in the speed and reliability of peer review for research on the health of older people, an area of science whose importance grows with every demographic projection. Researchers interested in the role are directed to the journal’s application page, where the publisher says it looks forward to hearing from qualified candidates.
