Artificial intelligence tools embedded in accounting systems appear to nudge listed firms in the Gulf Cooperation Council toward more sustainable financial decisions, but only when they are paired with strong ethical governance, according to a new dynamic panel study published in Discover Sustainability. The research, led by Ayman Abdalla Mohammed Abubakr and colleagues, analyzed 52 listed firms across the six GCC states over the period 2015 to 2024, using a two-step system generalized method of moments estimator to handle the persistence of sustainability behavior and the endogeneity that plagues simple correlations between technology and outcomes.

The study proxies sustainable financial decision-making with ESG performance and finds that this outcome is distinctly path dependent: the lagged dependent variable is positive and significant across all specifications, meaning firms that scored well on sustainability in one year tended to keep doing so the next. Against this dynamic backdrop, the adoption of AI-based accounting tools shows a positive effect on sustainable decision-making that is marginally significant. The authors are careful to frame this as suggestive rather than conclusive evidence that AI-enabled accounting systems support more sustainability-oriented choices, since marginal significance in a panel of this size leaves room for uncertainty.

Perhaps the most striking negative result concerns digital infrastructure alone. The study constructs a digitalization index, and in the baseline models this measure is statistically insignificant. In other words, simply having digital systems in place does not improve sustainability outcomes unless firms possess complementary capabilities that convert raw digital capacity into decision-relevant intelligence. This finding pushes back against a common assumption in emerging-market finance that digital transformation is automatically a sustainability lever.

To probe how AI adoption might work, the researchers tested two mechanisms: accounting intelligence and data quality, the latter proxied by earnings quality. The evidence here is weak. The estimated links from AI tool adoption to these mechanisms are positive in sign but statistically insignificant, and the digitalization index performs no better. In the full dynamic model, neither data quality nor accounting intelligence is a significant direct driver of sustainable financial decision-making. Bootstrapped indirect effects through both channels are statistically indistinguishable from zero, so the data do not support the proposed mediation pathway. The technology, in this dataset, does not demonstrably raise sustainability performance by first upgrading accounting intelligence or earnings quality.

The moderation analysis, however, delivers the study’s central positive result. Ethical governance significantly strengthens the sustainability payoff of both accounting intelligence and data quality: the interaction terms between accounting intelligence and ethical governance, and between data quality and ethical governance, are positive and significant even though the corresponding main effects are not. This pattern suggests that the same levels of accounting intelligence and data quality translate into better ESG outcomes only in firms with robust ethical governance structures. Governance, in this framing, acts as the switch that determines whether intelligent, data-rich accounting systems actually feed sustainable decisions.

By integrating direct, mediated, and moderated pathways within a single dynamic panel framework, the study offers both theory-based and practical guidance for AI-driven sustainable finance in emerging markets. For firms in the GCC and comparable economies, the message is twofold: AI adoption may contribute marginally to sustainability-oriented decisions, but digital infrastructure by itself is not enough, and the returns on accounting intelligence and data quality depend heavily on the ethical governance environment in which those tools operate. The authors position the work as an advance in the intelligent-accounting literature, though the marginal significance of the direct AI effect and the unsupported mediation mean the findings should be read as an early, suggestive map of how technology and governance interact, rather than a definitive causal verdict.
