A statistical panel analysis of South Asia from 1996 to 2022 finds that economic and environmental cooperation, rather than strategic considerations alone, are associated with regional outcomes relevant to Pakistan’s geopolitical position. The study examines relationships involving Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and the Maldives, with Pakistan as the central case. The analysis covers quarterly data from the first quarter of 1996 through the fourth quarter of 2022.

Its scope is therefore a seven-country South Asian panel extending across 27 years, rather than a single-country assessment or a survey of developments outside the region. The source article presents the study as empirical research on the interconnected effects of economic integration, security dynamics, energy connections and environmental cooperation. Researchers used a cross-panel autoregressive distributed lag, or ARDL, framework to account for short-term adjustments and long-term regional dynamics.

The model also incorporated Granger causality and variance decomposition analysis. The results indicate that security cooperation, energy alliances, economic links and environmental engagement affect Pakistan’s geopolitical status in varied ways. The abstract does not provide country-specific coefficients, effect sizes or separate rankings for each relationship.

It instead reports a broader pattern: regional outcomes reflect multidimensional interdependence, so strategic positioning cannot be explained through one type of cooperation alone. Economic and environmental cooperation emerged as the main geoeconomic influences on the modeled regional outcomes. The finding is presented as a result of the statistical analysis, not as evidence that every increase in trade, energy connectivity or environmental activity automatically produces a particular political result.

The study’s observational panel design and selected variables do not establish that cooperation alone caused changes in regional outcomes. The findings therefore describe statistical associations and modeled contributions across a defined regional dataset rather than universal effects. By placing trade-linked economic ties, energy alliances, environmental engagement and security cooperation in the same analytical framework, the study expands the idea of regionalism beyond geopolitical competition.

Its main contribution, the authors state, is dynamic empirical evidence about interrelated geoeconomic dynamics in South Asia. This approach also connects those relationships to questions of regional integration, bilateral diplomacy and sustainable development programs. Several boundaries constrain the conclusions.

The data end in 2022, so the analysis does not assess subsequent geopolitical developments. It focuses on Pakistan and six South Asian comparison countries, and the abstract does not report the underlying indicator values, model specifications or uncertainty intervals in enough detail to permit independent evaluation from the supplied material. The results should accordingly be understood as findings about the modeled 1996–2022 panel.

Within those limits, the study offers a compact picture of how economic, energy, environmental and security relationships can shape the strategic space available to Pakistan. Its central takeaway is not that one partnership category determines regional outcomes, but that cooperation across several domains is associated with Pakistan’s changing position and with wider South Asian dynamics.
