An observational analysis of 1,678 purported reincarnation cases found that reports involving an unexpected death were associated with a shorter interval between the earlier person’s death and the reported “rebirth.” The cases came from the University of Virginia Health System’s Division of Perceptual Studies, which had collected reports over several decades in which investigators matched a child’s recollections of a previous life with the experiences of a specific deceased person. The most unexpected deaths were associated with an average 40% reduction in the interval, while the median intermission across the analyzed reports was 16 months. The researchers did not conclude that reincarnation is real and said the mechanism underlying the temporal pattern remains unclear.

Lead author Saeedeh Sadeghi, PhD, of the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Division of Perceptual Studies, said the study tested an earlier published report suggesting that violent death could be associated with a shorter time between death and birth. The larger analysis was intended to determine whether that relationship could be explained by cultural beliefs, psychological influences or bias in the collection and interpretation of reports. Researchers considered whether the earlier death was natural, including death from illness or old age, or unnatural, including death from an accident, intentional violence or suicide. They also examined the person’s age at death and how expected or unexpected the death appeared to have been. Deaths in the most unexpected category were associated with intermissions that were, on average, 40% shorter.

The association persisted across multiple analyses designed to assess possible confounding and bias. These included the possibility of “memory contamination,” meaning that a child might be repeating stories heard from other people, and the possibility that families in religions that embrace reincarnation could be using the idea of rebirth as a way to cope with grief. Contrary to the researchers’ expectations, the relationship was stronger among families that did not believe in reincarnation than among families that did. “The effect remained even after we accounted for several cultural and psychological factors, and it was actually stronger in families whose religions did not support reincarnation,” said UVA researcher Philip Cozzolino, PhD. The team said the results did not support the idea that social beliefs were driving the pattern.

Published in the American Psychological Association journal Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research and Practice, the study was described by the authors as the largest systematic investigation to date of temporal patterns in reported past-life memories. The researchers said patterns across many selected cases are harder to explain as isolated exaggeration, fantasy or fabrication, while also noting that individual accounts can allow for different interpretations. The team wrote that its findings align with earlier studies and suggest that the interval pattern “may reflect a systematic phenomenon not readily accounted for by existing psychosocial frameworks.” That interpretation remains a research hypothesis rather than evidence of reincarnation, and the analyzed sample consisted specifically of the division’s strongest collected reports rather than a newly recruited prospective cohort. The research was conducted by Sadeghi, Marieta Pehlivanova, PhD, and Cozzolino, who reported no financial interest in the work.
