Hong Kong’s most highly ranked dental school is joining forces with one of the world’s largest dental implant manufacturers in a move that aims to reshape how future specialists are trained while making advanced oral healthcare more affordable for the wider public. The Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong, which holds second place in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for dentistry, signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Straumann on 21 August 2026. The partnership centres on the Institute for Advanced Dentistry – Multi-Specialty Clinic, known as IAD-MSC, where postgraduate students treat patients under specialist supervision as part of their clinical education.

The agreement was signed by Professor Lijian Jin, Dean of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, and Mr Patrick Loh, Executive Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific at Straumann Group. Under its terms, Straumann will sponsor a comprehensive portfolio of implant solutions and biomaterials for use in the clinic’s teaching and patient services. The sponsorship covers up to 900 units of each specified product category over the coming five years, a scale of provision that gives the faculty a predictable supply of the devices and materials on which modern implant dentistry depends.

The practical beneficiaries of the arrangement are students enrolled in four of the faculty’s Master programmes: Periodontology, Implant Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Prosthodontics. These programmes combine academic coursework with supervised clinical practice, and their graduates are expected to take up specialist roles across Hong Kong and the wider region. With sponsored materials in hand, students will be able to provide implant treatments for patients who attend the multi-specialty clinic, turning what would otherwise be costly private procedures into supervised training cases that also serve community need.

Dental implant treatment is among the most technically demanding areas of restorative dentistry. It involves the surgical placement of titanium or ceramic fixtures into the jawbone, followed by a healing period during which the fixture integrates with bone, and finally the attachment of crowns, bridges or dentures that restore function and appearance. Each stage requires careful diagnosis, imaging, surgical precision and prosthetic planning. Because complications can be significant, training bodies worldwide emphasise that dentists should gain substantial supervised experience before practising implant procedures independently, which is precisely the gap that clinic-based postgraduate programmes are designed to fill.

According to the faculty, the collaboration will enhance clinical training by enabling Master students to manage more advanced implant cases than would otherwise be feasible. Case complexity matters in specialist education: straightforward single-tooth replacements teach fundamentals, but managing patients with limited bone volume, multiple missing teeth or complex medical histories builds the judgement required of a qualified specialist. By widening the range and number of cases students can treat, the partnership is intended to strengthen professional knowledge and clinical skills and to help cultivate more highly qualified specialist dentists for the community.

The second pillar of the agreement concerns affordability and access. The faculty states that the collaboration will allow IAD-MSC to optimise its operational costs, since donated implants and biomaterials reduce the input costs of each treatment. Those savings can be passed on to patients in the form of more affordable advanced dental care. Implant treatment is typically expensive, and cost is a well-recognised barrier that prevents many people from replacing missing teeth, with consequences ranging from impaired chewing and nutrition to reduced confidence and social participation. Lowering the price of supervised implant care therefore has implications that extend beyond the dental chair.

The Institute for Advanced Dentistry – Multi-Specialty Clinic itself represents a particular model of dental education, one in which teaching, research and patient service are integrated within a single facility. Postgraduate students treat real patients under the oversight of experienced specialists, patients receive care at reduced cost, and the faculty generates the clinical volume needed to sustain high-quality training and research. Partnerships with industry fit naturally into this model, because manufacturers supply the materials and technologies that define contemporary practice, and students benefit from training on the same systems they will encounter after graduation.

Professor Jin expressed his gratitude for Straumann’s support and said the collaboration reflects the shared commitment of HKU and Straumann to advancing dental education and community service. His remarks frame the agreement as more than a supply arrangement, positioning it as a mutual investment in the region’s oral health workforce. For Straumann, a group with a substantial Asia Pacific presence, supporting a top-ranked dental faculty offers a route to engagement with the clinicians who will shape implant practice in the decades ahead. For the university, the sponsorship addresses a persistent tension in specialist training: the cost of the materials students need to learn with.

Professor George Pelekos, Programme Director of the Master of Science in Implant Dentistry programme, expanded on the educational vision behind the partnership. He said the mission is to set a new standard of clinical training in implant dentistry while expanding treatment opportunities for patients. In this way, he noted, the faculty is not only nurturing the next generation of dental professionals but also delivering tangible benefits to society, which he described as a clear demonstration of HKU’s commitment to academic excellence and social impact. The statement underscores how specialist training programmes increasingly measure their value by community outcomes as well as examination results.

The five-year horizon of the sponsorship gives both parties time to embed the arrangement into curriculum planning and clinic operations rather than treating it as a one-off donation. If the model performs as intended, its significance may reach beyond Hong Kong. Dental schools worldwide face similar pressures: rising demand for implant and restorative care as populations age and retain more of their natural teeth into later life, high material costs that constrain training capacity, and patients who cannot afford specialist treatment. An agreement that simultaneously increases the number of advanced cases students can manage and lowers the price of care for the public offers a template worth watching, and the faculty suggests it will help improve the oral health and quality of life of members of the public while contributing to the overall well-being of the Hong Kong community.
