The International Mathematical Union (IMU) used the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia to announce the 2026 Fields Medal recipients, widely viewed as the “Nobel Prize of mathematics.” Awarded every four years, the honor recognizes outstanding work already in place as well as the promise of future breakthroughs. This year’s medals go to four mathematicians who span both pure and applied directions, reflecting how modern mathematics continues to connect deep theory with real scientific questions.

The prize is designed for exceptional researchers under the age of 40. Each laureate receives 15,000 Canadian dollars (about $10,600) and a gold medal featuring the likeness of Archimedes. IMU president Hiraku Nakajima praised the group for embodying the depth and vitality of contemporary mathematics while highlighting the excitement of celebrating these achievements at the ICM.

Yu Deng of the University of Chicago was cited for work in partial differential equations, including a rigorous route from hard-sphere dynamics to the Boltzmann equation for rarefied gases. He also developed derivations of wave kinetic equations from nonlinear dispersive systems and introduced probabilistic viewpoints on nonlinear Schrödinger dynamics.

John Pardon of Stony Brook University received recognition for advances in symplectic geometry. His contributions include new approaches to virtual fundamental cycles, Fukaya categories of Liouville manifolds, and the counting of holomorphic curves. He also contributed to related areas such as group actions on 3-manifolds and knot theory.

Jacob Tsimerman, based at the University of Toronto, was cited for extending o-minimal techniques across arithmetic and complex algebraic geometry. His work includes the proof of Griffiths’ conjecture on the algebraicity of images of period maps, linking logical “tameness” to geometric structures that encode number-theoretic information.

Hong Wang, a mathematician at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES), was honored for research in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. Her cited achievements include multiscale and decoupling methods applied to local smoothing for the planar wave equation, alongside major progress in Fourier restriction and distance set problems.

Beyond the Fields Medals, the IMU announced other major awards. Shayan Oveis Gharan received the Abacus Medal for contributions that connect mathematics with computer science. Graeme Segal won the Chern Medal for lifetime achievement.

Yurii Nesterov was awarded the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize for work with significant applied impact, while Hannah Fry received the Leelavati Prize for public outreach. Together, the announcements underscore how the mathematical community is simultaneously pushing frontier theory and broadening public understanding of the subject.
