A laboratory materials study found that reshaping ZIF-8-derived porous carbon affected its performance as an adsorption carrier for solar thermochemical energy storage. Researchers synthesized the carbon in five forms—rhombic dodecahedron, cube, plate, interpenetrating 36-faced twin and rod—and investigated the relationship among carrier morphology, pore structure and storage performance. Their composite based on the interpenetrating twin morphology, designated ITZAC2, combined high moisture absorption with a storage density of 1407.5 kJ·kg−1 and retained 95.2% of its capacity after 20 test cycles.

The work focuses on porous carbon derived from a metal–organic framework, a class of materials whose high surface area and adjustable pores can make them useful for adsorbing moisture. ITZAC2 was distinguished by locally concave geometric features and a hierarchical structure containing both micropores and mesopores. According to the study, these characteristics promoted loose packing and limited particle agglomeration, conditions the authors associated with high moisture absorption.

It also showed favorable solar-to-thermal conversion characteristics and heat-transfer capability, although the research summary does not provide the test conditions or numerical values for those properties. The 20-cycle test provides direct evidence of operational reliability over a limited operating period: LM2/ITZAC2-60 retained 95.2% of its capacity. This result does not establish durability over a full seasonal cycle or the lifetime expected of a building-scale installation.

The study is also a laboratory investigation of porous adsorbents and salt composites rather than a demonstration of a complete solar thermal storage system, and the supplied evidence does not describe field testing, deployment scale or performance under changing outdoor humidity and solar exposure. The findings connect the interpenetrating twin form’s structure with improved moisture uptake, high storage density and stable repeated performance. The authors also propose that such materials could support future implementation of solar thermochemical energy storage in buildings, but that prospect remains an application direction rather than a demonstrated building application in the reported work.
