The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) has signed a renewed six-year master research agreement with Eastman, extending a decade of joint work aimed at turning chemistry and materials science into manufacturable technologies. The new deal deepens long-running research ties and is designed to accelerate development across multiple technical domains while keeping translation from lab to industry at the center of the collaboration.

Under the agreement, Eastman will invest at least $3 million over the next six years to fund sponsored research, service agreements, and a broad set of university–industry initiatives. This marks the third master research agreement between UTK and Eastman, following the partnership’s start in 2015 and building momentum toward long-term, repeatable innovation pipelines.

Rather than funding isolated projects, the partnership emphasizes sustained co-development with direct alignment to industrial technical challenges. UTK leadership highlights that continuity helps move breakthrough science toward real-world impact, creating opportunities for students and researchers to work on problems connected to regional and community innovation needs.

A key technical focus spans polymer chemistry and chemical process technologies, including catalysis and sustainability-driven research. Collaborative efforts also extend to advanced manufacturing approaches such as additive manufacturing, where lab-scale methods must be adapted for consistent performance at production-relevant scales.

The agreement supports research that targets energy and sustainability while advancing next-generation chemical processes. By coupling academic expertise with Eastman’s application-driven priorities, the collaboration aims to lay groundwork for a cleaner, more sustainable chemical industry.

UTK researchers describe the collaboration as more iterative and interactive than conventional arrangements. Instead of working in isolation, they engage in regular scientific discussions with Eastman scientists, helping shape research direction as results emerge and ensuring that promising ideas can be tested for scalability and economic viability.

Over time, the partnership has reduced barriers that typically slow technology transfer. Eastman’s Innovation Center on UTK’s campus—established in 2020—functions as a hub for project management and student engagement, facilitating day-to-day coordination and improving the speed of joint technical execution.

The initiative also strengthens talent pipelines. UTK graduates contribute critical scientific know-how to Eastman, while the agreement enables support for student organizations, faculty initiatives, and campus activities that broaden how students interact with industry research and development.

Together, the renewed agreement positions UTK and Eastman to advance materials innovation, develop workforce capability, and create practical solutions for manufacturing challenges—an approach intended to generate viral momentum in science news by showcasing a model of sustained, tightly coupled university–industry translation.
