A new study in Nature Cities has mapped how where you live in Greater Accra can determine whether you reach emergency obstetric and newborn care in time. Reporting in 2026, researchers led by Wong and colleagues combine spatial analysis with service-area modelling to quantify geographic gaps in access to life-saving facilities.

The team focuses on emergency obstetric care and emergency newborn care—services that must be reached quickly when complications arise during pregnancy, childbirth, or the first days of life. Using location data for hospitals and clinics and modelling travel times across the urban landscape, the study estimates how many people can realistically reach appropriate care within critical time windows.

Results point to striking inequities. Some districts appear well connected to functioning emergency services, while others face longer travel routes, limited coverage, and lower effective accessibility. These spatial patterns suggest that infrastructure, road connectivity, and the distribution of providers interact to shape who benefits from emergency care.

The analysis also highlights that “distance” alone does not tell the whole story. Even when facilities are geographically present, barriers such as travel speed differences, network fragmentation, and uneven service catchments can produce large practical delays for expectant mothers and newborns.

Researchers interpret these findings through a public health lens: delays in accessing emergency interventions can worsen outcomes, increasing risks of severe maternal complications and neonatal mortality. In rapidly growing urban settings, the mismatch between where populations expand and where emergency capacity is located can widen over time.

Importantly, the study uses granular, evidence-ready metrics that could inform planning decisions. By identifying underserved areas, policymakers can target facility upgrades, improve referral pathways, and prioritize transport or outreach strategies aimed at reducing time-to-care.

The authors also argue that improving access requires more than adding beds. It involves aligning care networks with population needs, ensuring that emergency readiness is distributed more equitably, and monitoring accessibility as the city’s geography and demographics change.

With the DOI now available, this work offers a viral, data-driven snapshot of health geography—and a clear message: in Greater Accra, geography can be destiny at the most critical moments.
