UNAM Researchers Publish Open Access Articles in Over 2,400 Taylor & Francis Journals

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), one of Latin America’s premier research institutions, is poised to significantly expand the global dissemination of its scholarly output through a groundbreaking open access (OA) agreement with the renowned academic publisher Taylor & Francis. This strategic three-year partnership introduces a transformative model for Mexican researchers, offering them the ability to publish their work as open access across an extensive portfolio exceeding 2,400 journals. This initiative not only redefines accessibility but also promises to accelerate the pace at which innovative research reaches international audiences.

Open access publishing, the central pillar of this agreement, is increasingly recognized as a crucial mechanism to democratize scientific knowledge. Through unrestricted, cost-free access to research articles, OA circumvents traditional paywalls, enabling researchers, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide to engage with the latest findings without financial or institutional barriers. UNAM’s adoption of this model reflects its commitment to becoming a global epicenter for interdisciplinary research excellence and innovation, facilitating enhanced collaboration across geographical and disciplinary boundaries.

Taylor & Francis’s introduction of its first ‘read & publish’ agreement in Mexico marks a monumental step for the region’s academic community. This novel arrangement preserves the existing institutional subscription privileges for journal access while simultaneously embedding an option for authors affiliated with UNAM to publish in hybrid journals—those that offer both subscription-based and open access content—as well as fully open access journals within the Taylor & Francis and Routledge Open Select collections. The immediate public availability of published OA articles ensures that critical advancements in knowledge are shared expediently across the global research community.

A notable aspect of this collaboration is the anticipated alleviation of financial constraints that often hinder open access publishing, particularly in fields where research funding is scarce. Open access publication typically involves article processing charges (APCs), which can be prohibitive for researchers lacking dedicated grants or institutional support. The agreement with Taylor & Francis effectively waives these costs for UNAM researchers, empowering them to disseminate their work broadly without the burden of fees, hence leveling the playing field for Mexican scholars in a competitive international landscape.

Antonio Sánchez, representing UNAM’s General Directorate of Libraries and Digital Information Services (DGBSDI), articulated the university’s vision behind the deal, emphasizing how the agreement not only removes financial obstacles for authors but, more crucially, extends the reach and influence of their scientific and cultural contributions at both national and international levels. This forward-looking approach underscores UNAM’s strategic prioritization of broader societal impact and knowledge transfer beyond traditional academic circles.

The new OA partnership also promises to amplify the visibility and uptake of research outputs in rapidly evolving and impactful domains such as artificial intelligence, nanoscience, renewable energy, and biomedical sciences. These areas are pivotal to addressing global challenges, and making related research openly accessible ensures that findings can be iteratively built upon, fostering innovation cycles that benefit both academia and industry.

Jeff Voci, Senior Vice President and Commercial Lead for the Americas at Taylor & Francis, highlighted UNAM’s stature as one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the Americas. He underscored the breadth and significance of UNAM’s research endeavors, noting how the partnership aligns with Taylor & Francis’s mission to facilitate open dissemination and maximize the reach of cutting-edge scientific knowledge, catalyzing progress across multiple disciplines.

The functionality of the ‘read & publish’ model within this agreement addresses systemic challenges prevalent in scholarly publishing. By consolidating subscription access and open access publishing into a single framework, it streamlines workflows for libraries, authors, and publishers. This harmonized approach contributes to sustainable OA publishing by integrating funding mechanisms and reducing transactional complexities, serving as an innovative blueprint for other institutions seeking to balance budget constraints with open research goals.

UNAM thereby joins a global consortium of over 1,000 academic institutions collaborating with Taylor & Francis to support their researchers’ transition to open access. Within the Americas alone, more than 100 institutions have embraced similar agreements, signaling a continental shift towards more equitable, transparent, and widespread dissemination of scholarly work. This momentum underscores an emergent publication ecosystem where the traditional boundaries of access are progressively dismantled.

From a technical standpoint, the open access articles resulting from this agreement will be immediately available under Creative Commons licenses, enabling unrestricted reuse, redistribution, and adaptation of the work, provided proper attribution is given. This licensing framework facilitates not only reading but also subsequent innovation, educational use, and policy development based on sound, peer-reviewed evidence produced by UNAM researchers.

Moreover, by fostering OA publishing, the partnership indirectly supports enhanced citation impact and academic recognition for UNAM authors. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that open access articles generally achieve higher visibility and citation rates compared to subscription-based publications, contributing to increased academic influence and career advancement opportunities for researchers.

In addition to augmenting research accessibility, such agreements have profound implications for the broader scientific communication infrastructure. They stimulate the digital transformation of academic publishing, encouraging the adoption of innovative metrics and tools to assess impact and engagement more effectively. This evolution aligns with global trends towards open science and transparency, crucial in an era driven by rapid data exchange and collaborative problem-solving.
