Staffordshire University has joined forces with Pakistan’s top university to drive research in artificial intelligence.

The Creative Artificial Intelligence Lab (CAIL) is a joint initiative with the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) which will spearhead advancements in AI within the creative industries.

CAIL will harness Staffordshire University’s expertise in computing, games development and film production, combined with NUST’s cutting-edge capabilities in AI and computer science.

The Lab will explore ways of integrating AI into content creation tools to aid game developers and artists in producing high-quality animations, sound effects, and other creative elements. It also seeks to drive innovations in immersive films, gaming and theatre experiences, making use of Staffordshire’s expertise in virtual production and motion capture.

Professor Carlton Reeve, Associate Dean for Research & Innovation at Staffordshire University, explained: “Staffordshire University has a rich heritage of digital innovation. We were one of the first institutions in the UK to offer a degree in computing, we have a 50 year history in film and television production, and this year we are celebrating 20 years of games.

“This new venture will harness the power of artificial intelligence to push the boundaries of creativity and redefine what is possible in fields as diverse as gaming, animation and virtual production. From immersive storytelling experiences to AI-generated artwork, the opportunities are limitless.”

Based in Islamabad, NUST is rated the number one Pakistani university in the QS World Rankings 2023 and is recognised globally for its research excellence.

Last year, the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing to work collaboratively on research, innovation and enterprise.

“NUST is a world-leading university and we are excited to launch this ground-breaking collaboration. The project will provide opportunities for PhDs, staff development and student exchanges which will benefit both institutions,” commented Professor Kevin Hetherington, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Staffordshire University.

“It is through partnerships like this that we harness the collective wisdom and talent of individuals from across the globe, transcending geographical boundaries to tackle the most pressing challenges and unlock new frontiers of knowledge and innovation.”

The project will also benefit from NUST’s specialist expertise in AI and research strengths in areas such as remote aerial monitoring, video surveillance, agricultural monitoring, and information extraction.

Dr Rizwan Riaz, Prorector RIC, at NUST, commented: “This collaboration between Staffordshire University and NUST not only marks a significant stride in global educational partnerships but also establishes a precedent for future technological integration in higher education and research.

“There is a evident enthusiasm and capabilities within both teams and we are looking forward to what CAIL can achieve for AI globally.”
