Reviewers frequently disagree, sometimes fundamentally, about the significance of a finding or the adequacy of its evidence. The editor must parse these reports, identify which criticisms are substantive and which reflect reviewer idiosyncrasy, and compose a decision letter that is simultaneously demanding and fair. In the best cases, this correspondence improves the science itself: authors clarify their methods, temper their claims, run additional controls, and produce a stronger paper than the one originally submitted. Editorial boards are volunteer structures in most disciplines, staffed by active researchers who juggle editing against grants, teaching, and laboratory work. High editorial turnover disrupts continuity in journal standards and slows decision times, and publishers have found that visible appreciation, whether through awards, editorial board privileges, or career credit, helps retain the most capable editors. Recognition also matters to early-career researchers considering editorial service: when distinguished editors are celebrated publicly, editing is framed as an integral scholarly contribution rather than an invisible tax on research time.
