HOUSTON – Rice University is set to launch a groundbreaking Bachelor of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) starting in the fall of 2025, marking a strategic commitment to educate and prepare the next generation of leaders in one of the most transformative fields of the 21st century. As AI rapidly redefines industries ranging from healthcare analytics to financial markets and autonomous systems, Rice’s new program aims to blend rigorous technical education with a broad interdisciplinary foundation, emphasizing responsible and ethical AI development.

President Reginald DesRoches underscored the significance of this initiative, stating that the program embodies Rice’s vision of leadership in areas of national and global importance. The university intends to set an example in how AI is taught, applied, and governed, recognizing the technology’s profound social and cultural implications. This new undergraduate major represents more than just a set of courses; it reflects a comprehensive strategy to cultivate innovators who understand AI beyond algorithms — embracing governance, societal impact, and ethical challenges.

The curriculum will be administered through Rice’s Department of Computer Science and is designed to move beyond traditional AI electives that have so far been available only within broader computer science programs or through graduate study. John Greiner, assistant teaching professor and director of the new AI major, emphasized that Rice is not merely repackaging existing courses, but rather creating a purpose-built curriculum designed specifically for undergraduates with a coherent structure that covers AI comprehensively.

Unlike a conventional computer science degree, which divides emphasis among systems, algorithms, and AI, Rice’s AI major intensifies focus on the core AI disciplines and their underlying mathematical foundations starting at the sophomore level. The program balances advanced topics such as machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision with foundational skills, incorporating deeper mathematical rigor in areas like linear algebra and statistics critical to modern AI methods.

Rice’s program distinguishes itself by integrating disciplines traditionally outside engineering. Understanding intelligence is a multifaceted challenge that intersects with cognitive psychology and philosophy. Core courses will include cognitive psychology to examine human intelligence mechanisms, enabling students to appreciate AI from a biologically inspired and psychological perspective. Additionally, a dedicated ethics course developed specifically for AI students will engage them with the philosophical and social implications of AI technologies, preparing graduates to tackle ethical dilemmas faced by practitioners and policymakers alike.

Leading faculty involved in the program’s design emphasize that students will gain an education that is simultaneously broad and specialized. Vicente Ordóñez-Román, associate professor of computer science, highlighted that beyond the technical curriculum, students will benefit from the university’s vibrant AI research environment, including resources such as the Ken Kennedy Institute. This allows students to engage with cutting-edge AI research and applications in areas like quantum machine learning and information retrieval, fields at the forefront of AI innovation.

Beyond technical training, Rice sees its AI program as a hub for cultivating leadership qualities in its students. Dean Luay Nakhleh articulated the university’s vision for students to become independent and creative thinkers who not only master AI techniques but also critically assess how these technologies can be responsibly deployed to advance societal good. This ethos aligns with Rice’s broader institutional commitment to interdisciplinary approaches and ethical scholarship.

This AI major comes at a time when demand for AI expertise is surging globally. Chris Jermaine, chair of computer science, noted the profound intellectual revolution AI represents — positioning students at the forefront of transformative knowledge that will shape decades to come. By making AI education accessible at the undergraduate level through a structured, specialized curriculum, Rice aims to accelerate workforce readiness and address a critical skills gap in industry and academia.

Rice’s approach is strategic in building on existing strengths, including its renowned undergraduate education tradition and robust research faculty expertise. The university is unusual in offering a dedicated undergraduate degree in AI rather than relegating it to a specialization within computer science, a move that reflects AI’s maturation as a distinct discipline. This fresh pathway contrasts with many institutions where AI education is predominantly available only in graduate programs or scattered electives.

The program also welcomes students from nontraditional backgrounds by incorporating interdisciplinary courses. Those studying cognitive science, neuroengineering, or philosophy have pathways into the major, broadening access and enriching the classroom environment. However, students should expect a curriculum with heavy quantitative, programming, and engineering orientations comparable to other engineering degrees — ensuring graduates emerge with rigorous technical proficiency.

Rice’s AI degree program recognizes that AI’s evolution is not just technical but cultural and ethical. By developing courses that look at AI’s societal roles and responsibilities, and by embedding ethics and cognitive science within the major, the university is pioneering a holistic model of AI education that prepares students to navigate the complex realities of AI’s integration into everyday life.

As AI continues to permeate all sectors, Rice University’s new Bachelor of Science in AI stands as a pioneering effort to educate a new class of professionals equipped with both technical mastery and a nuanced understanding of AI’s broader implications. The program aims not only to produce skilled AI practitioners but also thoughtful innovators capable of steering AI’s development in ways that benefit society at large.
