UC San Diego Health’s East Campus Medical Center has undergone a profound transformation in the two years since joining its health system as the network’s third hospital. This strategic expansion represents a significant leap toward enhancing access and quality in acute care, harnessing a forward-thinking blend of advanced clinical services and community partnership. The hospital’s evolution showcases a pioneering model where academic medicine dovetails with localized patient care, reshaping the healthcare landscape across eastern San Diego County.

Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, highlights the critical role East Campus Medical Center plays in this enhancement. By extending acute care closer to nearly 30% of their patient base residing in East County, the medical center alleviates longstanding demand pressures at other main campuses such as Hillcrest. This localized focus offers a comprehensive spectrum of specialty services—ranging from cardiology and gastroenterology to orthopedics, psychiatry, and urology—delivered with an academic medicine foundation that bolsters outcomes and innovation.

Patient volumes reflect this success, with the daily census at East Campus Medical Center doubling since 2024. More than 4,000 patients have opted to transfer to this facility from Jacobs Medical Center and Hillcrest Medical Center, underscoring its growing reputation as a hub for efficient and high-quality care. The center also serves over a thousand individuals beyond the UC San Diego Health network via its partnerships with community physicians, solidifying its role as a critical regional resource for San Diego and Imperial counties.

One of the strategic drivers behind this growth is the seamless integration between UC San Diego Health’s academic specialists and community physicians. This symbiosis enables continuity of care emphasized by relationship-based medicine, research-backed interventions, and access to cutting-edge clinical trials. Michelle Ziemba, COO of East Campus Medical Center, articulates how this hybrid model reduces wait times and brings specialized care within easier reach for patients, signifying a major advancement in health system responsiveness.

The center has notably launched innovative procedures previously unavailable at the community hospital level. A prime example is the introduction of aquablation for benign prostatic hyperplasia—a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted technique that replaces surgical heat with precision water jet ablation. This technology exemplifies UC San Diego Health’s commitment to offering state-of-the-art treatments, which enhance safety and recovery while preserving healthy tissue. Since its inception in 2025, the urology team celebrated reaching over 100 such procedures, marking it as the only facility in the system providing this advanced therapy.

Technological upgrades extend into other specialties as well. Cardiovascular services benefit from the opening of an advanced heart failure unit and the designation of East Campus as a 24/7 Stroke and STEMI receiving center, positioning it at the forefront of urgent cardiac and neurological emergency care. These capabilities enable rapid intervention in critical events like ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, directly improving survival rates and patient prognoses through timely and expert treatment.

The hospital’s expanding surgical capacity—from two to five operating suites—reflects infrastructural investment that matches the burgeoning demand. According to Dr. Justin King, Medical Director of Surgery, the facility has scaled its workforce and technology footprint appropriately, ensuring that both the volume of surgeries and the complexity of procedures can grow without compromising quality or timeliness. This development supports a broader range of advanced operations including neurosurgery and complex radiological interventions like cardiac catheterization.

In addressing behavioral health, East Campus has secured a landmark $10 million lead grant from Price Philanthropies to establish a Behavioral Health Hub slated for completion in 2028. This facility will feature two inpatient psychiatric units with a total of 50 beds and deliver comprehensive outpatient services including partial hospitalization and interventional psychiatry. This initiative tackles the critical mental health care gap, integrating psychiatric expertise within the broader hospital system to create a continuum of care.

Alongside programmatic expansion, East Campus Medical Center is undergoing a $322 million infrastructural renewal approved by the University of California Board of Regents to modernize its facilities and improve seismic resilience. This ambitious project preserves the hospital’s core while upgrading patient rooms, clinics, surgical suites, and critical systems. It exemplifies a fiscally responsible strategy that leverages existing assets rather than costly new construction, thereby extending the hospital’s operational lifespan and enhancing safety and comfort for patients.

Recognition of East Campus’s advancements comes not only from internal metrics but also through external validation. The hospital earned an ‘A’ grade in safety ratings from the Leapfrog Group and was ranked in the top third of community hospitals nationally by Vizient’s Quality and Accountability Scorecard. These accolades, coupled with continued excellence reflected in UC San Diego Health’s overall top-tier ranking by U.S. News & World Report, reinforce the hospital’s emerging status as a model for academic-community care integration.

Christian Tomaszewski, MD, Chief Medical Officer, characterizes East Campus Medical Center as an incubator for innovation where nimbleness and clinical excellence coalesce to enhance patient outcomes. The ongoing expansion and refinement of services not only improve healthcare delivery but also foster a supportive environment for staff, ensuring sustainability and quality in care provision. This holistic mission underpins the center’s rapid growth and solidifies its role as a transformative force in regional healthcare.

Through its systematic and thoughtful approach, UC San Diego Health is crafting a future in which patients across eastern San Diego County can access highly specialized, evidence-based care close to home. The collaborative model between academic physicians and community providers breaks traditional silos, accelerating the translation of research breakthroughs into everyday practice. This strategy epitomizes modern healthcare innovation aimed at maximizing impact, improving patient experience, and expanding healthcare equity.

As East Campus Medical Center continues its development journey, it offers a blueprint for community hospital transformation, reaffirming that with investment, partnership, and visionary leadership, it is possible to elevate local health systems to world-class standards. The center stands as a testament to the power of integrated health networks to meet growing healthcare demands with agility, precision, and compassion.
