Platinum can be built into the crystal lattice of neodymium ferrite nanofibers, and doing so measurably changes both the structure and the magnetic behavior of the material, according to a study published in Ionics in 2026. The research team, led by Chao Song, Jiayue Xu, Hanqiong Luo, Runa A and Quanli Hu, synthesized Pt-doped NdFeO3 nanofibers using electrospinning followed by calcination, a route that produces fibers with a typical diameter of 200 to 300 nanometers.

X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples revealed no impurity phases, indicating that the Pt ions were completely solid-dissolved into the neodymium ferrite lattice rather than forming separate platinum-containing compounds. The incorporation of Pt was not structurally neutral: it induced distortion of the crystal lattice and triggered defect compensation mechanisms within the perovskite oxide. The authors report that this compensation may involve A-site deficiency, a redistribution of the iron valence state, and oxygen nonstoichiometry, meaning the oxygen content of the lattice departs from the ideal stoichiometric ratio.

The magnetic consequences of this structural perturbation were substantial. The remanence, the magnetization that remains after an external field is removed, decreased from 0.2079 emu per gram for undoped NdFeO3 to 0.1859 emu per gram for the composition Pt0.1NdFeO3. The coercivity, the field strength needed to demagnetize the material, fell more dramatically, from 5000 oersted for NdFeO3 to 3374 oersted for Pt0.025NdFeO3, a reduction of roughly a third at a relatively low platinum substitution level.

The study demonstrates that Pt incorporation provides an effective strategy for tuning the structural and magnetic properties of NdFeO3-based perovskite oxides, with the magnitude of the effect depending on the doping level, as shown by the differing outcomes for Pt0.025 and Pt0.1 compositions.

The findings are limited to the nanofiber form of the material prepared by electrospinning and calcination, and the reported measurements concern structural characterization and magnetic hysteresis parameters at the compositions described.
